C2 of Year Finalist (appearance mods) 2019
It was 2007 and I wasn't even looking for a car at the time. I was just fooling around on the web and saw an ad for a '63 vert for sale. He was asking 23K, at the time I thought it sounded like a good price, but I had no idea what it was worth.
I asked if someone could look at the car for me because it was in CO and I didn't want to drive 9 hours to be disappointed. He got back to me that he didn't know much about Corvettes, but it looked good to him. He said it ran well and had a killer paint job.
The thought of a Corvette really got me going and I grabbed a cashiers check and headed out. When I got there the car had a candy paint job and I could tell the car had been recently re-built because there were so many newish items.
I bought the car and when I got it home and was cleaning out the car I found the previous owner's info and he bought the car 8 years prior, had only put about 4K miles on it and paid $23,900.
He never did any research on what the car was worth, and I guess he figured he got to own the car for 8 years and it only cost him $900. I was very lucky because I knew nothing about the bird cage or that almost everything on the car was one year only. The car needed nothing and I feel like I got a pretty good deal.

I bought a 1960 Vette with a perfect body and a spun bearing in 1967 for $800.00. Caught hell from my dad for bringing home that piece of junk which sat in his barn for over 25 years. I always planned on rebuilding the engine, but either didn't have the time or money. Finally sold it in the early 90's for about 25 times what I paid for it. The only time I ever drove it was when we pushed it into the barn. I too did also own a L-79 at one time , but it was in the form of a 66 Chevy II Nova. I think I paid around $1800.00 for it in 1970 and it only had 4,000 miles on it. Was a really fun car and yes I did beat a few Corvettes with it too

One more Old Vette Story
Well the year was 1966 and I was 16 years old and a Sophmore in High School. A kid in my class asked if I new of anyone that wanted to buy a 60 Corvette that his neighbor had for sale. Asking price $800.00.
I thought...sell my 62 Super Sport for $700.00 and it would be a no brainer.
Well after school I drove my buddy home and took a look at the car. Great Car !!! Silver with red interior...dual quads...glass packs...Duntov Thumper Cam..4:11 rear end..OMG...this was the car
for me !!!
The guy said take it for a ride and show it to your Dad and see what he thinks. My Dad not knowing what I was up to...just so happend to be sitting on the front porch when I rolled up to the house.
To him this car sounded like a Nostalgia Drag Car and he said...What the Hell is that???
Well I convinced him I needed the car and before I went any further he told me to go call the Insurance Man and tell him what you would like to buy. Heck that would be a piece of cake....whaaatttt!!!!
Well after the discussion with the Insurance Agent...I was truly saddend by the fact that the insurance for the Beast would be around $400.00 per year. Well since I worked 30 hours a week @ $1.35 an hour back in 1966....I had to pass on it.
I often think how cool that car was !!! Steve Bowling Green Ohio

Attachment 47955977 I got this 67 back in 1974. Gave my old neighbor $1000.and my old 69 Mustang fastback big block for the vert. Later on I saw the Mustang on the car lot for $1000. So I guess I paid about $2000. for it. About the going price for a mid year at that time.

I gave $3000 for the 56 in 73.
Tired 327/2bl carb, close ratio Muncie and 4.11 posi and modified interior. Some chrome and trim missing.
Today, after a total frame off.
SB400 with modified FI, airbox, wide ratio Muncie, 3.08 posi, HD brakes/susp, wide wheels, Al Knoch interior (except it's red/black). All chrome and trim is installed.

It took me a lot of years to get my dream 59. I wasn't picky, I just knew I wanted a manual and a soft top. In October 2016 a neighbor told me his grandfather passed away mid restoration on a 59 and they wanted to sell. My jaw hit the floor and I figured I'd never be able to aford it but after selling my Roadrunner and emptying all my bank accounts I towed home my first corvette. A 4 speed and a soft top!
The frame had been replaced due to rust so that's what started the restoration. The car had a fresh paint job, new stainless exhaust, rebuilt non-original 283 motor, new top in a box, and a bunch of NOS trim for me to put back on. The interior is all in boxes but there.
Best $35k I ever spent. I have no idea if I overpaid or not but it was worth every penny to me. These pics are the day I got it.

I bought my first corvette in 1968, a base model convertible for $1500, silver with red interior. The previous owner was a little woman who had blocks on the pedals so that she could reach. The clutch pedal hinge was loose and fell off every so often.

Burning Brakes
In 1974 I was stationed in Cheyenne Wyo and paid $2100 for a 65 coupe 365 horse and knock offs. Shortly after purchase I converted it to FI using a 63 Unit I already had.
I transferred with the Corvette to San Antonio in 1975 and found a 380 unit but needed a distributor to go with it. I found one in Austin TX in 1976/77 made the trip and bought the distributor. The person I met was Richard Seivers. I had to pass on the Corvette he wanted to sell for $15,000 and it was literally a wreck. It was my brush with history as the car was GS001.
In May 2014 I paid $26500 for a partially restored 64 coupe with 365,PB and AC. Today I'm in even deeper, by the time I hit daylight I'll probably be looking at a China sky.
