Rear Plate Problem
So, finally got my new VA antique plates for the 67 and put them on today. Very heavy. What I didn't realize is the old NJ plates had been glued into the holes beneath the plates. Hit a bump in the road and the whole thing fell off. Couldn't believe the 2 empty big holes where the plates were. My Dad must have glued the old plates or something. I am amazed it never fell off before. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Glass the holes in and drill the correct size hole for the plastic nuts

There are 2 plastic license screw nuts that are square shaped that press in and lock into those 2 holes. The holes used to be square shaped.
It's a common problem where the holes over time wear out and get enlarged.
You can get the 2 plastic screw nuts with the new screws at any parts store and glue them in, or fill the 2 holes and shape new holes for the new plastic nuts.

Thanks for the suggestions!! The opening has worn out over time and the plastic piece just falls right in.

Had the same problem on my 67. Took a bolt with large washer attached and slid it in from behind the panel, then put the nut on the bolt at the license plate frame. It's tight to get it in with the tire tub in place but doable. One day I will repair the enlarged holes.

My 63 had wallowed out plastic anchor license plate holes...the '63 anchors are actually smaller than most midyear and round so somebody slammed in later, rectangular anchors and boogered up the holes. Its quite easy to glass them back in and then drill a hole in the center and use a square file to make them right again. PITA to get to the back though - removing the valence helps so you can put fiberglass on the back...

These will hold your plate on while you decide.

Did the reverse! 2plus hours of labor. Phew.

Got underneath the car and fit my skinny arm behind the where the plate goes. Bought new screws and washers. Not a fun job but got it done. I found this filler that works with fiberglass and might try that and clean it up a little when I have more time. Thanks!
