What side of the car is the battery?? Factory AC cars had it on the driver side with a special access cover on the inner fender. The expansion valve might also tell a story. Car should also have an STV valve versus POA or something else from the factory.

There are a LOT of clues if we go digging.

Engine stampings aren't known to be perfect impressions, although I see your concerns, the "H" is also shallow, so the assembly line guy at Tonawanda probably just struck it weird. Just as the '9' in the VIN is shallow.

Everything else is checking out, but I do need to get the tranny and rearend numbers asap.

All C2 small block engines were built and stamped at Flint, Michigan.

Also for the air-conditioning question...the vent at the top of the center stack...is that an AC only thing?

That is correct for a L79 - yellow at 5700 rpm, red line at 6000. same as my '67 original L79.

Of course, the tach could have been changed out.............

Yes. Non AC cars do not have that vent.

Guys,

Can't thank you enough for your input, it seems I'm on my way to verifying the car. Just need to find and answer for the AC on the trim tag and hopefully, the tranny #'s will do that.

I'm curious... I've never known Chevrolet to put the transmission code in the interior trim code line? My experience has been it's usually part of the engine stamping codes.

Only on interior colors that was not the standard black. It was in the ECL codes. It was for the parts that effected that were painted there was over 30 possible color/option variations of the console alone. If you do a search on ECL codes by JohnZ you will get a better explanation

Noland Adam's book on C2s has a good section on ECLs at the end of each chapter.

1966 418 AC is clearly shown as dark blue vinyl with a M35 automatic transmission - and NOT with power windows, headrests, shoulder harnesses, or 36 gallon gas tank.

This information was also available on the original POP (protect o plate).

There were many errors in ECL codes especially when they began in 1964, and with so many interior trim color combos. Many known examples of ECL errors on Trim tags on early cars, but one would think fewer errors by 1966.

Doug
My car & engine are about two weeks ahead of your example. Here's photos of my Jul 13, 1966 convertible, rally red, black vinyl, 300HP, powerglide, with K19 CA smog, for comparison purposes. The engine assembly date & HR code on mine 'slants' running close to the cast edge & part of the legs of the "R" appear not struck. The 'P' on your block looks different; deeper maybe?
Jeff

Tried to find an ECL decoder and came across the STL Vettes site that had this disclaimer on ECL codes...I've not yet found anything to discredit this car...not saying I won't when I get a chance to dig deeper, but the ECL seems to be a crap shoot at best.

Honestly, I've seen hundreds of engine stampings over the years and I'd be much more suspicious of a perfect stamping than one that shows the human application of the stamps...IMHO. I look for font, size and placement before I go to the codes themselves.
