Default Hurst Shifter Question

1965 L76, M20, 4-Speed

I know that there is a fix for the stock shifter rattle, but my question is why doesn't the Hurst shifter rattle like the stock one? Isn't it a direct replacement? I want to purchase a Hurst to get rid of my rattle and have more precise shifts, but I want to make sure that the Hurst is the final solution to my rattle issue.

So, what makes the Hurst rattle free? Have you heard of Hursts rattling like the stock?

I have never had a Hurst rattle. Have had one "buzz", but that was from a failed U-Joint due to improper driveline angle.

And I never had a Hurst break off in my hand, like the stock shifter in my 70 Vette did.......

Think you will hear that the stock shifter's reverse lock out system is the source of the rattle.

A Hurst is more of a precision shifter with closer tolerances. It also mounts to the trans, not the frame crossmember. Dennis

On the other hand of the three cars my dad and I have with stock Muncie shifters none of them rattle or make other noises.

A number of parts inside a Muncie shift handle. Solid bar of chromed steel in a Hurst handle.

Does the Hurst not have a reverse lockout?

no reverse lockout on a Hurst Competition Plus.

IIRC there is a version of a Hurst that does have a reverse lockout, BUT it is different from the Muncie shifter and is not incorporated in the handle.

No lockout... but it's heavily spring loaded.

My Hurst shifter has the stock-looking 'hypodermic needle' shifter handle but the lockout is fake....you can pull up on it for mental masturbation to go into reverse, but its not required... Its never rattled but I did replace the nylon bushings at the shifter rods shortly after buying the car...

I have had this one for 45 years. Solid and the curve handle looks nice and fits your reach,

Which one did you order? I just ordered one and the install kit and just want to make sure I ordered the correct parts. Shifter p/n 3917960 and install kit 3733162.

Unfortunately like yours Jack, my handle is not interchangeable so we can't install the faux handle that disguises the advantage we have over our Muncie shifting brethren...

My experience with many Hurst shifters is that if you have a rattle, it is caused by driveline imbalances or out of true issues: worn pilot bearing, worn tailshaft bushing/driveshaft yoke, bad tranny mount/wrong driveline angle, out of true driveshaft(s). When Hurst shifters get a little wear on them, they can get slightly looser, but this seems to make them smoother, and they still tend not to rattle.

Jackfit, do you know which handle number you have? I would like it curved back a little but the handle that came with my shifter is straight and only about six inches tall. If nothing else could you measure the height of yours from the top of the mounting point to the ****?

If you want the stock handle and your Hurst is not the changeable handle one, you can cut off the Hurst handle and weld on the fake Muncie one.

I will as soon as I get the car back from the painter. I am planning to rebuild the hurst and will post photos. My handle is welded on. I had the choice back in 1970 when I bought it. Straight or curved. The straight handle looked to muscle carish.

Only cost $79 at Modells, a Walmart type store in the 70's
