tranny noise
I recently installed a new engine with a quicktime bellhousing. Motor is all Dart, with forged internals, internal balance 383. New Ram street clutch, disc, bearing, auto gear bushing.and 26lb flywheel.
M21 tranny. The trans litterally slid right in. Did not bore align.
This tranny shifts smooth as silk.Always did. Never any issues at all, and leak free to boot.
But now there is a low screech/whine kinda sounding noise when you keep clutch pedal depressed and shift into any gear, except 4th. It will also sometimes make this noise as you let out clutch, AND when keeping pedal depressed and shifting into gear (1,2&3) while at a standstill. At times it appears to be like resonating up through shifter-shifter area. Kinda hard to explain.
It will not do it simple depressing clutch pedal, so at this point I don't feel it is TO bearing related. Could try a different bearing I guess, but we'll see. I have approx 3/16" air gap on TO bearing.
And it doesn't always do it, but frequently enough to be an issue.
Id remove trans and inspect, but no obvious telltale sighs of an issue. Hmmmm.

Wonder why it would make a noise with the clutch in and the car in gear. The only thing spinning would be the TO bearing, right?

Sounds like it's possibly the pilot bushing.

John and Gary hit it on the head. With the clutch disengaged, the input shaft should no be turning and thus nothing in the trans would be turning. The pilot bearing and throwout bearing are the only two things turning and thus making the noise. Real far fetched is something on the clutch disc rubbing on either the flywheel or pressure plate.

Just another option, others in the past found the dust shield rubbing.

Seems to be a lot of junk TO bearings sold now.
