Default Battery recommendations

Restoring a 66 convertible. What size battery does it take and any recommendation on best to buy. I'd probably would get an Optima but the bright colors won't look good in my engine compartment. Thanks for any info. Oh yes, it's a small block with out air.

I recommend the AC Delco 24A if you can find it.

The fit of your battery hold-down, heat shield and the top configuration of a prospective battery will probably be the driving factors in your decision (unless you want to saw off tabs or make other changes). Be aware that battery configurations have changed over the years.

I too have always gotten good service from AC Delco batteries - here's a pic of my three year old Professional 24PG 700 CCA, still going strong.

I have always preferred the group 34 batteries. They have the same (X-Y) 'footprint' dimensions as group 24, but are 1" shorter in height. This provides some extra clearance under the expansion tank area for cables, disconnect switch, etc. They are typically AGM sealed cells, so there's no chance of spilling electrolyte during installation maneuvers. Flawless performance from my Northern Battery Professional Series 34-XL purchased in 2010; CCA @ 0* rated at 800, CA @ 32* rated at 960A.

I got a Bosch AGM battery from Pep Boys, and they currently have a 25% off discount on them. If you have the battery cover then color of the battery should not be so big a deal, but you will still see the top. This one is blue.

Bosch Platinum Series AGM Battery Group Size 24
Part # 24-710BAGM SKU: 844459

That is what is in my car - I took the small deduct during judging rather than spend the money for the 'restoration' battery (several hundred dollars) and still get a hit for originality...

AC-Delco Professional Group 24-7YR, has been in the car for 15 years; had another 24-7YR in my '69 Z/28 that only lasted 12 years.

I don't see a hold down. Am I missing something?

Where do you typically buy that battery from?

'67's used a wedge clamp device at the base of the battery to hold it in place. Earlier midyears used hold-downs over the top of the battery.

Unless the car has factory A/C and then the battery is mounted in the driver's side fender well using two bolts and a cross brace to hold down the battery. Sorry for the weak picture.
