The C1 market has softened lately and I just think it was time to move on. I got a good price and, yes, I have a mental image of the lucky new owner in 5th gear/overdrive with the dual quads gulping fuel doing 120mph (I don't know what that is in km/hour) on the AutoBahn.

I am absolutely amazed at how many times in the last few years I've heard different people tell me their car went to Germany.

I really hate to see all of the American classics going overseas, but I understand that wasn't your decision. Seem like a shame that a lot of classics are leaving home.

Congratulations Frankie, very nice car and sad to see it go. My son was stationed in Germany the past 3 years and I can say the Germans love Corvettes. His is a 99 twin turbo Lingenfelter with less than 40,000 miles. The Germans were offering him 60K cash and he did not take it. He was transferred to Alaska and brought it to Alaska.
I bet is is now worth 30K. I tried to get him to sell but kids like Horse Power.
Germans think nothing of driving 120MPH it is very normal for them. Mom's in mini vans with kids in them drive that fast. Good think yours has the 5 speed.

I have had three opportunities to sell three different straight axles and midyears to overseas buyers and have politely refused each time. I agree that it is much easier to send them over there then to get them back. Sad to see another one go. Frank probably won't mind because he has a new SW project underway and I bet that one will stay in the US.

I prefer to sell within the US but when you consign a car for sale you don't have a say....my selling company says about 30% of his sales are overseas. I just wasn't getting offers that made sense stateside. As I stated the C1 market is soft and may resurge but I'm not waiting... The car was going to needs some things done after 9 years and about 50,000 miles on it since I bought it. Paint was tired, front end really needed gone completely over (I did the rear end and suspension two years ago)
I don't know how looking for a car part on the forum turned into a stealth, restomod split window project - didn't even say it was for a car I owned and never said anything about a spit window - gotta love cyberspace...

FTF - kudos on selling the '61, and getting the price you wanted. Like you, I had both a C1 and a C2, and gave them both to a consignment dealer, and said whichever one sells first, I'll keep the other one. The '58 sold, and at the price I wanted. This was two years ago. So, I've still got the '64, and while I like it, I really miss the '58, and wish I would have kept them both. I did sell a couple of other "old" cars, so, I've downsized too, like you're doing. I'm five years older than you, so, I get it about the desirability to downsize. That part is 'all good'. I've done some other downsizing and simplifying things too, but, still, I do miss that '58.

I always admired your 61 and will miss it on Corvette Forum and would have loved to have a shot at buying it if I had the room. Glad that you got the price you needed and for sure the 61 will be admired wherever it is seen.

I've sold my vintage Mustangs myself and my '67 Chevelle SS-396 three years ago on my own.
This time I used a local consignment shop here in Orlando.....I set the bottom line figure I wanted for the car and anything over that is theirs. I believe they made 10%; maybe a little less when all was said and done and the overseas shipping comes out of their pocket. I'm fine with that and the car was safe in their showroom, detailed monthly and started weekly while it was being marketed.
Again the sale is pending but the overseas buyer put down a 20% non-refundable deposit so I think its a 'done deal'...
As to the question of price, IMO, yes overseas sales prices seem to be higher....
I made some attempts to sell the car locally myself and got lowball, asinine, insulting offers so I decided to let a pro handle the sale and that worked out nicely.
And yes, if I didn't have the '63 I would have kept the '61 - no question on that at all.
