lost vin tag

lost vin tag
What is the impact in value of a car that has lost its VIN tag?
The original VIN was stamped by DMV, based on the fact that title was clear and matched the VIN on the secret location on the chassis.
So, the VIN is legit for the car as it matches the VIN on the chassis.
The car now has a VIN tag that was issued by DMV with the original serial number.
What would be the impact in value of the car?

It hurts the buyer pool. Some people will not buy a car with a state issued VIN due to diminished perceived value and resale problems. Other people don't really care, but are usually smart enough to know that the car's sale price will take a hit and use it in negotiations.

if its a state issued vin tag, you are lucky its got the original number on it and not a state specific number instead. a state issued vin is very common on a stolen then recovered car.

Two things, first how would a car "lose its vin tag"? And second, I've never heard of GM issuing a replacement Vin tag for any car. Bear in mind, I haven't heard everything

My 67 tags were removed because the car was damaged and the insurance decided to salvage the car.
Wonder what kind of hit in value a wife or child would take if they lost their vin, (birth certificate). Waaaay to much put on a small piece of metal, especially when the car is bone legal.

the question is so ambiguous and devoid of pertinent information that no one could answer it in any meaningful way.
But I will try.
"what would be the impact on value of the car?"
Significant.

Actually, what exactly does sagnificant mean?
If we trust DMV, inspectors, the legal system, and the cars have proper paperwork, exactly where does the fear generate?
Is it a lack of understanding? lack of trust? Time limit as to how long the car will exist? OR, is it that any one can see past that little rivited tag?
Personally I've seen some real junk with a tag and some real beauties without their born tag.
Tags were removed for a good reason, so they couldn't be put on a stolen car.
I was fortunate that the DMV inspector that checked my frame #'s and paperwork allowed me to rivit a new tag in place and remove the hidden one. I said it was all in the interest of restoration. My new title is as it would have been when the car was new. IF and only if I sell my car all that will be disclosed and given to the new owner. Yes, it's an original 67 435 that was worth 1700.50 with 17.00.00 damage. Cost me 550.00 back in 1971.

I'm confused. The OP stated that the original VIN was stamped by the DMV. Original VIN's were stamped by the manufacturer. And only the manufacturer. That said, if it has a replacement VIN tag that matches the original number, but is a DMV replacement, the value of the car is decreased a whole bunch. As stated, most Corvette guys would walk away. I would be one of them. Too big of a can of worms to deal with. If value is not an issue, no worries. But since the OP asked specifically about value, it is a big deal.
