Default Ammeter gauge question

As I mentioned in a call for help last week, my 67 vette sat for four years. After new gas and a new battery, it started right up. I took it for a four mile ride and it ran well. I did note though, the ammeter gauge was on "0". while I drove. When I got back home, in neutral when I reved the engine, the needle moved positive to the first mark.

Bad alternator? Bad gauge? Loose belt? OK?

I have a test meter but no idea how to use. (Being OLD is good- being old + dumb, not so much)

It depends on the charge of the battery, but that sounds fine to me. All mine have read at the center mark when driving unless the battery was low, or I turned on the headlights. Even then it worked back to zero. If you connect the voltmeter across your battery terminals and read the battery voltage, you should get around 12.5v. Start the car up and read again, at idle you should read around 13.5 or so. If so, the alt is charging.

Sounds good to me. All you need is to verify your generator output volts is greater while engine running than your batt voltage with engine off.
