Default Fuel Pump

So I am hoping for some help. I just got my 59 Vette and its numbers matching but I don't know what small things have been changed along the way. My problem is that my fuel pump was leaking badly so I removed it to replace it. Every parts store I have gone to had given me a pump that looks identical to the one I took off but with one major problem. The one they gave me had 1/4 fuel line inlet and outlet. My fuel line is larger.

What is the correct size fuel line I should have?

Can anyone direct me to the correct pump I should have?

The pump that came off my car is not a rebuildable unit.

Then it must not have been an original...

IIRC, and without checking, the fuel line should be 5/16 or 3/8, not 1/4.

You may have had a crimped together later service replacement (not the screw assembled original/rebuildable type).

You'll find out the keyboard jockeys at the boutique parts stores don't know squat if the computer don't tell them what to think...

This is what www.napaonline.com search for '59 Corvette comes up with 3/8" fittings....if your local NAPA store is out of stock they can usually have it in 24 hours....just like I told you in your other post:

Thanks Frankie. I will call them today. I went on the Napa website after I read your other post and I searched for Airtek but didn't' find anything definitive so I called the napa store and they were keyboard jockeys too. I will call specifically about this model number today.

Edit, I looked up that exact one you posted by the part number and it says 1/4 inlet and outlet.

Maybe I am just too new to know what I am talking about but is that talking about the line size of the fitting size?

I think that is female 1/4" NPT pipe fitting size being shown on the above pump.

That should be correct for both inlet and outlet thread on the pump...the fittings mount there...

Frank,

Think OP is confused by "fuel line" size, vs fuel pump inlet/outlet pipe fitting size.

You are right. Sorry to be a pain in the rear. I was confused because the pump i had was so different from the one Frank posted and the NAPA one said 1/4 inlet and outlet. I knew my fitting was bigger than 1/4. Now i get it, its not fitting size, its line size.

I went online and found a near by store that had the pump Frank posted. I went there and put what I had side by side and even threaded my fittings into it. Its a match. Its the rebuild-able style so its probably more correct that what I had on the car before.

Thank you for all the help. I will admit I am still learning. My other project is all modern parts so its so much easyer for me to figure out what I need... As I learn this older stuff will get easyer.

Yeah, I belatedly realized that

And the OP was right to keep digging around on here until he got straightened out...much better than multiple trips to the parts counter and returning with the wrong thing

OK one more question. So this pump has the fuel line input and out put clocked in a different direction than the pump I took off. Since its rebuildable can I unbolt the bottom half, turn it, and bolt it back on? Or is that just a bad idea to try and unbolt it. I don't want to wreck it but if I can turn it then I would't have to remake the fuel line to the carb.

There is a clocking procedure but I'm surprised you would need to do that...

See the one I took off the lines come off the right side where the new one comes off the left. If I reclocked the new pump they would match. Who ever put that other pump changed the lines to match so if I can reclock the new pump I'll be ready to bolt it all in

I read your document. Looks like it's. A different part number for the different clocking. I should check the store again...

No near by stores had that in stock so I reclocked it. It was easy. Then I put on the flex line.

I remember those late nights in a garage smelling of fuel....

One thing about being older, I'm in no hurry on ANYthing anymore!
