Interesting big brake car for sale
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1962-Chevrol...m=131984678613
The seller told me he can't check the frame VIN derivative stamping because there isn't enough room between the top of the frame rail and the body. For that reason (and because of the relocated VIN plate), I'm not going to bid.
I will bid if the seller confirms the frame number matches the VIN plate.

That is a cool time capsule! I agree, the relocated VIN is a bit of a snag.......but easily fixed.

I just dunno...
Hint: look at the placement of the nose flags, the missing ridge around the side coves, and the oval-shaped tach drive cable hole in the firewall.

The one picture of the front brakes appears to show 2" brake shoes, not 2-1/2". Makes me think this is an RPO 686 car, not an RPO 687 car. Maybe it's just the camera angle, though....

Or a standard brake with a cooling fan added. No details offered on motor, FI unit, etc. and it's supposedly a big brake FI car delivered 99 units from the end of production......even non-car people had heard the rumors about the '63......

The seller told me he paid Lyle Davidson $17,000 for a rebuilt injected engine after he bought the car in Oregon. It has a clean deck.

Jerry, what would be the issue of simply re-installing the VIN tag onto the steering column, where it belongs, and registering the car? I don't see a big deal here.

So, the guy is not a vette guy but he is presenting the car as a red, red, fuel, big brake car, hummmm. How does he know all of that?

To me it looks like a '62....it has '62 coves and trim, it's missing the '61 spears and stainless surrounds....also missing the '62 ribbed rocker trim. Nose has been modified old school style to save weight.....

This car certainly could be a neat '62 with a relocated VIN plate, but I'd like to confirm the frame stamping matches the VIN before spending tens of thousands on it.

That car has been floating around for a few months now. In September it was on Craigslist in PA, and 4 weeks ago it was at Fall Carlisle. I took a quick look at it when it got there on Wednesday, but never got a chance to go back and take a good look at it. If I remember right, the seller has been asking around $57,000 for it.
If you look at the pictures of the left side of the car, the ridge still appears to be there. It looks like there's a seam showing in the center of the left front wheel opening. I suspect that the car was hit, and may have had a 58-61 3/4 nose hung on it?

My two cents worth..
Oval hole in the firewall? Not right. In 62 the hole was round, either one side of the dimple or the other but not oval. This tells me either there was a fuel car that had a standard distributor put it in (possible), or a non fuel car that had a FI distributor put on it (you must move the hole for the tach drive cable).
I blew up the side profile picture and I don't see fins on the drums... might just be a bad pic but I'd want to see the drums, I agree with Jerry, the shoes do look like 2".
The ridge on the cove does look flat, but that might be a mod that came with the nose crunch.

no ridge around cove on the right, ridge on left
white trunk floor w/o a trace of red that appears on various parts of the body
61 style tach hole too neat to be a later mod, looks factory
makes me want to see the underside of the body.
I think a 61 fell in love with a 62 and they exchanged dna
