Default Muncie Trans Year Code?

I have a 3851325 Muncie in my '61. This translates to a '64 or '65 with p0626 which would be June 26. Is there a year code stamped on the trans that would tell me the year?

Post a pic and I can tell you 64 or 65. Need to see the boss on the top of the case.

Go to www.5speeds.com/muncie2.htm
or Autogear.net

There was no year designator stamped by the Muncie plant on '64-'65 transmissions - year designation started in '67. Your best bet would be to look for a VIN derivative stamp with the first digit indicating the model year.

On the 64 the "boss" on the top of the case is "rounded. On the 65 case this center top boss is square. This is where the tailshaft connects to the main housing.

The rounded top "Boss" was still in use in the 1965 model year, I have several cases in stock, the latest P1203 Dec. 3rd 1964 for use in the 1965 model year...

1964 model year Muncie trans has the "P" number stamped on the machined surface for the side cover, lower R.H. corner, just like a 1963 704 Muncie main case...

1965 the "P" number moved to the passenger side rear vertical flange where it stayed thru the end of Muncie production...

Hope this helps... Crash

The tail SHAFT does NOT connect to the main housing. BUUUUUUUUUUUUUT, the tail HOUSING does connect to the main case.

This is a tail SHAFT (more correctly, a main shaft).

This is a tail HOUSING (more correctly, an extension housing).

That is correct. The square boss on top of a 1965 case was a late change.
