Default BB Oil Drain Plug Question

Does the oil drain plug have or need a washer on it to seal the oil pan? If it does, what type of washer is used? Mine is a aftermarket magnetic drain plug. Thanks All.

All '67 drain plugs left the factory with a thin white nylon gasket under the head. It's spelled out in the judging guide.

a nylon washer will work but not sure if they left the engine factory with them or if they used a brass or other soft metal for a seal

I like the copper washers, you can buy an assortment at your local parts store for a couple of bucks.

Back in the 1960's most cars used a copper or copper-clad gasket/washer for sealing. In the 1970's I know that GM went to the white nylon type. GM Part Number #3921989 (box of 20).

I see that there are copper oil pan washers with rubber centers to seal the oil drain plug.
What size do I need for the 437 oil drain plug?
The diameter of the plug that I need?

The Fel-Pro part number for the nylon washer is 70822. The drain plug is a crush-type seal, therefore the gasket needs to be nylon, copper, aluminum (or other soft material) to conform to the shoulder of the drain plug and mating surface of the pan. I suspect the original-issue gaskets were metal, and nylon emerged as the service part later in time.

That is the way it went................copper/copper jacketed asbestos and then nylon. Later on the metal outer ring with rubber inner seal arrived.

If your oil pan drain plug looks like the one in the pic's below, it most likely the original from your engine.

This is an original 3866916 magnetic drain plug for 65-66 and many 67 big blocks.
