1957 corvette starter question.

1957 corvette starter question.
Hi,
I am working on my 1957 Corvette. It came with a steel flywheel and an 11" clutch. I have a new standard flywheel and a 10" clutch that I would like to use. I installed the new clutch and flywheel and it now looks like the starter gear will not engage with the ring gear on the flywheel. It does line up with the ring gear on the 11" flywheel. I am sure that the bell housing is a stock 57 unit. Is there a different flywheel that is needed for using a 10" clutch.
Any help appreciated,
Thanks,
Pat

Assuming you have a 10.5" clutch-
Many new aftermarket flywheels are drilled and tapped for both 11" and 10.5" clutch.
You need a 168 tooth wheel if you are using the stock 57 bell and starter.
Either one of these will work. Looks like they are both on sale.

If I remember correctly GM has used both 153 tooth and 168 tooth flywheels in different early cars.
So it is possible the flywheel was changed at some time, but I don't think there were different starters unless you have a later bell housing where the starter had bolts that go up instead of back like a stock 57 bell housing.
