Default Aluminum welding

I have a aluminum intake that needs aluminum welding. The threads where a water nipple fitting screws in are not in good condition. I would like that area to be filled in and then re-tapped with the correct size pipe thread. Anyone in the New Jersey area or South Florida area doing this type of welding ?

The only one I know with a proven track record for such repairs is Jerry MacNeish in Maryland. He does this work as business.......along with many other auto related things. Just Google the name for contact information. He is a big name in the Z28 Camaro community

He is the only one I would personally use.

This is a very simple repair with a mig welder using the proper gas and aluminum mig gun. On the bottom of the Muncie I had one of the threaded holes for the trans mount completely broken off. The entire end of the boss was broken off. I simply dialed in the heat and wire speed and built it up, filed it flat and clean then tapped a new bolt hole. It's hard to see which side was repaired. Just get an experienced mig welder to do it for you. I'm sure it could be tig welded very cleanly too.

If the threads aren't too bad, you can simply run a pipe tap in just a little deeper and restore the existing threads.

Most autobody shops around here do aluminum welding, ask a few.

I think just about any local welder that's in the business could handle it. I stopped at the first weld shop I saw and he did a good job on my T10 tail housing.

Helicoils are for straight threads only, IIRC, not NPT threads.

I also doubt a helicoil woudl seal well.

Don't NPT threads typically screw into straight threads? It's the piece being screwed in that has the pipe threads isn't it?

Thank you for the New jersey and South Florida contacts. I did find a stainless steel helicoil the would accept pipe threads but I think the helicoil would be detectable by a judge.

Was my suggestion too cheap? Too simple? Not doable? Just curious.

Mike, that was the first thing I thought of because I have the pipe thread tap. The threads are too far gone and not enough material for the tap.

Male NPT threads screw into female NPT threads, the female threads aren't straight threads. Look at any NPT tap sometime.

I wasn't aware that they made helicoil for NPT, but I am not sure that is the best fix.
