You are not paying attention. I didn't say anything about a dime worn to .015. I just said a well worn dime. As long as the points open and close, within reason, the engine will run.

How many Model A's have you worked on and kept running on a shoe string? Any?

Several....and here is my 1915 that I restored back in 2006. It's running the original engine with magneto ignition and 4 wooden coils, all stock. I may not be 75 years old, but I've been working on old cars for a long, long time.

This is new entertainment for the Form - a debate as to who is more experienced about Model Ts!

I know nothing about Model Ts - the oldest Ford I've ever owned was a 1963 Falcon Sprint convertible.

I'm either too young, too rich, too lucky, or too good a mechanic to ever have had a car break down on the road due to improper point gap.

Hint: I am none of the above, so it's probably not a likely scenario.

Carry on, ladies

Oh, and call me kooky but if I carried around a spare set of points, I'd probably carry a feeler gauge too.

Duke
I hate to be a downer and bring this silliness to a close but we deserve an apology from someone in post #4. "tricky to intuit"... how about just plain wrong on the second part? My head hurts from all the scratching... and I'm a Duke grad!

You don't have any place to stick the matchbook cover on that there new fangled ignition system.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, Mike, but the Model T does indeed have a points gap....1/32" (about the thickness of a thin dime) on each of the 4 ignition coils!

Maybe that is where his Dad used the dime?

That's not bad news. That's old news.

Now stick your dwell meter on there and your timing light and see if you can get your timing to change while your boxes are buzzing sparks. Try to stay on topic here.

I am simply biding time, waiting for someone to pull out their dwell meter and timing light and go to work. Looks like a lack of interest in that subject.

Maybe someone could start a thread on honking horns?

So, um, if you hold the horn button down longer, does the duration of the horn blast increase or decrease?

Expiring minds want to know.....

Depends on whether the horn ring contact buttons stay closed or open intermittently due to poor connections............

It is kind of difficult to intuit...........

Honking horns? .. . In a word...........Manhattan.

Not sure if 'honky horns' is part of the vernacular.........but maybe.

So, broke out the dwell meter and timing light. decent weather in Atlanta area. I can confirm increase dwell retards timing. No question

(increase dwell makes points open later, therefore retards timing.)

Thanks.

Now for the second part. Was it one degree dwell for one degree timing at the crankshaft?

Duke won't believe me unless someone has proof.
