Default Scond gear grinding teeth when shift, BW 1963

I had the transmission removed to install new clutch so I thought I would rebuild borg warner T10 transmission to see if I can get it to shift easier. The trans is number matching. I put in new torque sliders and synchro rings. Put trans back in car and all the gears will shift but if I try to go into second I get a teeth grinding like the clutch is not push in. With engine off it will shift through all gears fine. But driving when I go from 1st to second it will not go in. I can stop car with engine running and it will. What have I done wrong. I did change out the pilot bushing and it was a tight fit for the input shaft but not sure if that's the problem.

You probably installed a slider or synchro ring wrong. It will need to come back out for an inspection. Pulling the side cover may give you enough of a view to see what's up. What causes grinding is putting a spinning object in contact with a stationary one.

Do you mean that the ID of the bushing is tight on the nose of the input shaft? If so, that can definitely cause the hard shifting you're seeing.

Pilot should be a free fit on the input shaft. If it is seized/stuck, it would tend to grind putting it into first unless you kept the clutch pushed in for awhile to allow the trans mainshaft to stop turning. Not likely the cause of a grinding 1-2 shift, but possible. Bottom line, pilot should not be tight on the input shaft. It should be snug in the crank flange. This needs fixing asap.

I'm removing trans now to check things out. Yes, the ID of the bushing was very tight on the output shaft. Before I installed it, I put it on the shaft and it was snug. I believe pressing it into the flywheel shrunk the ID even more. Another thing is I did not check to see if it was magnetic. It was a national bearing PB-656-HD that I used and has been recommend on this site before. When I installed the trans the last 3/8" I had to use the 4 bolts to bring it in tight against the flywheel housing. I thought maybe by running the car it would break the bearing in, maybe not.

Impossible to install a slider in wrong. If it went in backwards the front plate would not fit on but I will check and see.

Default Shifts like a dream now

I went through the transmission and reworked a few things but I'm 95% sure it was the pilot bushing. Removed one I installed first time and installed a new GM bushing.
