1964 drum brake hose question
I am attempting to change out the flexible rubber brake hose, but I can't get the hex fitting on the end of the old hose to loosen. The smaller nut on the steel line loosened, but after turning about two flats the steel line wants to twist. The hex hose won't loosen at all with the wrench I have. Is there a sequence to loosening or is it just brute force? I'm using flange wrenches.

I am having trouble understanding what you're trying to describe but..............
If you're trying to explain the flare nut on the steel brake line is trying to twist the line when you try to loosen it..........?
The best thing to do is to put heat, lot's of it on the flare nut and it'll release the steel tube.

Heat, some PB-blaster and a line wrench on the smaller nut...if none of those work I've had to replace the small metal line going to the rubber hose...sometimes they just weld themselves together or distort...

The hex fitting on end of rubber hose is not meant to loosen. It is held onto the frame with the slide on clip. If the fitting on end of hard line is loosened from the hex fitting on end of hose, then grab the bent end of slide on clip and pull it off the frame. This will release the rubber hose.

The rubber hose with the hex fitting will not rotate while it is locked into the support bracket (metal). Once you get the top metal brake line removed you remove the locking clip that is on top of the metal bracket and the rubber line will drop down. The rubber line (hex head) has groves that lock it in place on the bracket. Does that make any sense? Since the top metal brake line started to twist you may have to replace it.Hope this helps

Thanks everyone for chipping in.. now I remember reading about that bracket holding the hex fitting to minimize hose twisting. Duh! Thanks for helping my feeble brain remember.

Burning Brakes
That's a no hope situation. I had to replace both short metal pipes on my '62 when replacing the front flex hoses. (Same thing with the old metal pipes starting to twist.)

Lot of corrosion there. If the metal line is twisting with the flitting, it is rusted partially or completely to the fitting. More penetrating oil, but if it were me, I'd replace all the lines. They don't look safe to me. One of the few remaining good things about my home state, is brake and fuel lines never seem to rust out or go bad.

I also had to replace that hard line as one wouldn't loosen, and the other just rounded the nut off. Good luck.
