I really enjoyed the responses to the geezer threads about us older guys still driving our cars and still working on our cars. Also, the thread about cars deteriorating in the yard or garage which seem to be mostly owned by older guys.

So I thought I'd start another thread about what plans we've made for our cars once we pass on or when the Sheriff takes away our keys.

As for me, my son doesn't know how to drive a stick and has no interest in the car. My wife has a newer Corvette and isn't interested in keeping the '67 so I've told to contact the dealer where we bought our car and sell it back to him. Maybe she won't get as much as a private sale but she won't have to deal with the hassle of trying to sell it herself. He'll send a trailer to the house to pick it up and give her cash. Quck and easy for her.

BTW, forget about taking your car with you. I've checked into that and, apparently, it's not an option .

I'm only 56 but I have thought about it. I have no heirs so that isn't a possibility.

Since I am a lifetime NCM member, I may consider donating my cars to them.

Both the car I call Lydia an one I'm building now, Jimmy Joe are Gifted to the National Corvette Museum.

At least 6 months out of the year, one or the other should be on display, and maybe when the NCM gets the money to build the 2nd display building they want for Vette Race cars and other modified/custom Vettes, that have been donated to them, be on full time display.

They are also allowed to be driven in parades, ect. to advertise Museum as currently they have no cars they can do that with as well as sell them should need arise to raise money to prevent Museum from bankruptcy. Selling for expansion of museum is not allowed.

Better than a Tomb Stone with your name on it in a Cemetery. At least someone might notice name on plaque, donated by...LOL

My son has made it clear that he intends for his son to drive our '54 when it becomes 100 years old.

If he follows through, that will make 4 generations of our family which will have enjoyed the car. I'm the 2nd generation. Here is the 1st generation:




I hope I'll be around to see the 4th generation drive the car.

My son is into Corvettes also. He has a 2004 ZO6 with 14,000 miles. He will get my 67 when I can't drive any longer. He wants a Resto-mod so I can envision him doing that to mine. Since it's already customized I won't care what he does to it. Hopefully I'm healthy enough o help him.

Most likely wont be an owner-driven internal conbustion engine on the road in 10 years. Youll need a special permit and the insurance costs will be crippling. Theyll all be computer operated and run off electricity, sunbeams or pig farts. So forget your kids driving them. Classic cars will be in museums or in the crusher.

Both of our daughters (35 and 31) were raised driving stick. They've each helped strip our '66 coupe prior to a major restoration 5 years ago and they've each driven the car in road tours. They'll take good care of the car and will receive it via my will.

All our cars are registered TOD or WROS (transfer on death), so my wife or I will end up with all of them.
Hopefully our son will want 1 or 2 if he has the space.

the question you brought up is VERY IMPORTANT.
Most people figure a well written will can eliminate the financial red tape. Wrong, it just allows the government to tax everything as it goes through probate. Since it seems every state is different it is important to check with a lawyer and set your options in place.
We have most assets set up as joint with TOD, Survivorship, etc.
Check with your lawyer as I am not one.

As us "geezers" have been aging, I've seen guys die, usually unexpectedly, and the surviving wife trying to deal w/bills, grief, and uncertainty..... she knows there is value in his collection, but isn't sure of the true value, and doesn't want to hassle with the process of showing to tire-kickers, and wanna-be's, so, just lets some 'friend' of the family try to unload the collection for whatever is reasonable. Once the selling process is over, she's moved on, and doesn't concern herself with did she get the absolute highest market value.

For me, I fantasize that my son will take the responsibility and actually look for the absolute highest market value, and sell the collection for that, and hand the proceeds over to the wife. As I said, its a fantasy. More than likely, I'll sell off the collection when I feel the end is near. If I don't have that opportunity, see the above scenario.

I'm 56, have no kids, but have lots of friends with kids who want my cars...and know how to drive them. So in my will, various friends get various cars. I may end up selling some or all of them before my time comes, though, as I realize priorities and lifestyles change with time. We shall see.

I'm sensing some sarcasm here but I don't think you're far off. 10 years might be a tad early but it will happen. Only the cream of the crop will have any value.
