100 posts on transmission oil and no consensus. Why even take a chance on a myth ?
GL-4 is available, it works, no myths surrounding it and so glub, glub, into my very early Muncie it went....
We may be talking the difference between Ginger and Mary Ann but I'll go with the one that doesn't have the bad reputation (most times) whether its deserved or not

Kind of makes you long for a good old KO Wheel thread, doesn't it?

Several weeks ago I posted that I was having a minor gear clash from 3rd to 4th. Frankie suggested that I swap out the transmission fluid for Amsoil 4GL. I also called up D&L Transmission and talked to a tech about my problem and find out what rebuild kit I should get if it comes to that. After describing the transmission's behavior he said, before you remove your transmission and start a rebuild, dump out whatever fluid is in your transmission and replace it with Brad Penn 4GL. He said he's seen many problems like mine clear up by doing so.
I was able to find the Brad Penn stuff before I found the Amsoil stuff so I bought it and did the drain/fill. I did this the day before I was having knee surgery so I wasn't able to drive the car much after the new fluid was put in. However, I've had a friend exercise my car and he reports to me that he is not getting any gear clash in any gear. If this fix holds up, I'm a believer.

I just keep using ESSO Extra Arctic GL6 75W90 in all my BW & Muncie 4 spds and non-posi rear ends.
Got a great deal on a 20 gallon drum 30 years ago and it has served me well
Getting down to about the last quarter - but then so are "we" !
My posi rear ends get GM Rear Axle Lubricant.
No driveline lubrication issues in any of my vehicles -other than race breakage LOL

GL-6 is an obsolete API service category. It was originally formulated for "high offset pinion" axles. I don't have any details on how it compares with GL-5, but I expect, if anything it has more EP additive since high offset pinions probably cause more tooth deflection.

Hi Duke,
Esso technical literature states GL6 has 50% more EP additives than GL5.
My point is that with all the hysteria over GL5 rated oils corroding brass, my GL6 oil with 50% more EP additives (than GL5) has not caused me any problems at all.
Yes GL6 was designed for high off-set pinions ie Ford 9" and heavy equipment, worm gear applications etc
The GL6 design formulation was intended to provide more scoring protection - as would be caused by the wiping action of teeth with a high offset pinion.

The 50 wt. Valvoline racing oil that you mentioned still contains ZDDP; it is labeled as "VR1"
