Default Shift **** 65 Corvette

We are changing the the shifter boot on a 65 Corvette 4 speed. We can't seem to get the stock shift **** off. Has anyone out there got the secret?

Thanks we will try again tomorrow. We were concerned there was a locking mechanism and that if we applied too much pressure it would break.

Correct. I just removed mine when I was putting the body back on. It unscrewed pretty easily.

Thanks,
Dex.

As others have said, the ball just unscrews. The reverse lock out will just pull up out of the shifter handle, once you remove the ball. Watch out for the T handle spring, and the 2 split nylon bushings, inside the T (if the bushings are still there). If the bushings are missing, you may want to order a couple new ones. The bushings keep the T handle from rattling.

^This^

It may have been on there a long time, if original.

If you can't get enough umuph to get it to break lose, I would recommend wrapping the **** in some thick rawhide, and using a set of long-handled challenlock-type pliers to try to break it loose.

That should allow more torque than necessary to break it loose. If not, maybe it's not factory? However, if the reverse interlock appears to be original, I would assume that any **** that attaches would use the same screw-off method.

Got the ball off with a bit of force the spring came out and then I tried to pull the t handle up to remove but it only came up so far and stopped there is a bar at the top of the shifter sleeve I didn't want to yank on it because it is so small and I was afraid I would break something can you help with this problem

Just wiggle it a little and it should come out, nothing is holding that reverse pin down. I did this job 4 weeks ago.

This is unusual on a stock Muncie shifter. Most of them can be loosened by simply driving the car two miles.

Sometimes the end of the rod will get bent and resist pulling it out of the linkage lockout.

Thanks to everyone who helped out with this project. Job complete but it took a lot more time than I expected.
