The only way to be reasonably sure is to buy and use the Trim Tag Book by Sinor and Grenning.

It is hard to tell anything conclusive by a single flash photo...........but the tag does look a bit too new and shiney in the photo to be 50 years old.

Can you provide some macro closeups of these 5 areas? Near impossible to tell from the photo provided. Bill

Not an expert but the rivets look good! I think they're the real deal.

I'm no expert and I'm sure others will chime in as well but it looks good to me. I believe the experts say the "M" in motors should be above and just to the the left of "H" in Michigan.

As pointed out, need better photos for thorough forensic analysis. Nothing stands out from the picture you posted.

I owned a St. Louis bodied 66 that was less than 200 units away from this one, and the Z-bar had the similar break line in the blackout vs. zinc dichromate at the bend line. Both tags look good to me, and that Z-bar does too.

Just connected the dots ... this is that 66 "survivor" nassau blue/black L36 coupe with the smog pump that appeared on eBay yesterday for $95k. Bill

I think it is the camera flash that makes some portions of the trim tag appear to be so shiny, where the tag is slightly bent or deformed.
A picture without the flash would be more correct as to surface texture.
The VIN tag shows the same flash reflectivity.

Default 66 tags

Looking at my 66 trim tag the ' D' for month of assemble is much lower than that of the picture, bottom of 'D' is across from the middle leg of the E in style. Not an expert on how the tag was held in the stamping process, could they move and be different? Also if that is a period after STD top right my tag does not have. My vin is 400 units before this car.

My car is only 574 units prior to this one and the trim tag on my car looks identical from the stamping prospective. It does appear that someone polished up the trim tag on this one. Mine is more of a dull finish. No camera flash could produce that effect on my tag. Also, mine is dated D6 which is a monday. This one is dated D10 (friday). How many units did the plant produce during a day?

No, I really don't. However I do know from my own experience that there are people out there that know how to make a tag that is spot on. Do you think that the people that make these tags don't read all the info posted about all of the factory blips on these tags? Information to the masses is a two edged sword, it educates the fakers as well as informs the buyers.

I'm no expert either but after taking the photo to my 67 and looking at mine, I'd say it's not original. It could be the picture but it just doesn't seem to have the correct embossing.

The fact that it's that shiny also makes me think it's not original. My car has less than 80k miles and the tag is oxidized. I'd find it hard to believe a tag that's 50 yrs old has no oxidation.

Ed

When tags were stamped at the end of the line was there one for the convertibles and a different one for coupes.

Both used the same blank tag.

And also one for AOS body convertibles and one for AOS body coupes.

But the tag blanks were all the same as NowhereMan has already said.
