Re-read the 65 owners manual and learned something new
Imagine that.. Anyways I read the maintenance section and learned that Chevrolet recommends changing the oil every 60 days or 6000 miles, whichever comes first.
Really? Every 60 days aka every 2 months? That's a lot of oil changes...
I wonder how often that was followed?

[QUOTE=JohnZ;1594591366]Oil was cheap (and not as effective as today's multi-weight blends) in those days, and oil changes and related work kept gas stations in business; today it's just a guy sitting behind bulletproof Lexan. [/QUOTE

The 6000 mile interval started with the PCV feature in 1963 (I think) along with some newer formulated oils (I think).
FYI, oil wasn't really cheap back then and neither were filters as calculated by inflation.
Back then I used to:
Grease a car for a dollar. That's $7.81 today
I think five qusrts of 10/30 was about $1.85. Today, that's $14.46
I think a filter was about $2.00. Today, $11.72

Good to see you John!!
Thanks all for your thoughts on this. That 60 day thing took me by surprise.
Back in the late 80's I was a manager at Rose auto parts. Being curious I conducted tests on all the oils that we had in stock, Havoline, Valvoline, Quaker state, Pennzoil, etc. The tests were whatever I could think of to put the oils through and had on hand. One test was the heat test. I applied heat with a torch to each while in a pan to see which would hold up the best in a hot engine. Valvoline came out the best.
I did the same for the many car care products during times we had no customers. From what little we carried, Meguiars always did well.

Used to change the oil every 2,000 miles back then. If you drove 12,000 miles a year that worked out about every 60 days. As catalytic converters, lead free gas, improved motor oils and synthetics all came along, it was sort of painful but gradually weaned my way up to 3,000 and then 4,000 mile changes. Never have felt comfortable going past 6,000 even on newer cars with synthetics although a lot of owners do now.

I got so excited that somebody actually READ their Owner's Manual, I posted a reply too (which I've since deleted)...
My God, next somebody will say they're using the AIM to restore something.....surely these are the end times...
