Default VIN number

My 65 has been modified some what. But I'm just wondering what it started as. Not that is makes a difference but just curious I guess. I'm guessing nothing all that special.

Your VIN is not in the registry, so no help there.

For Corvettes, there is no Kevin Marti as there is for Ford, who has all the Ford production records for several years. The Corvette records were not retained.

Your car was built on 24-25 March 1965, but that's about it.

The rest comes down to doing some homework.

First, post all the info on your trim tag here and people can tell you a ton about your car. Sometimes from the options alone, some things can be determined.

You can also use the help of folks here, the NCRS judging guide, and some smart sleuthing to figure out more.

For example, even though mine has an incorrect engine in it now, I was able to determine that it was originally built with an L76 engine (putting one back into it shortly). There are chassis, fuel line, radiator shroud, dashboard tags and stamps, etc., clues that can get you pretty close to knowing how yours was built.

But start with the trim tag.

Finwolf - As already mentioned, post up a pic of the Trim Tag if it's still in place and that will help and also, does your 65 still have the original instrument panel? Again, post up a pic of it but in a nutshell, look for the tach redline to at least get an idea which engine might have come in your 65. Low redline, 250/300 horse and so on.

Are there any prior owners that you can find and talk to? I'm the 5th owner of my '67 and was able to take the info I got from the the 4th owner (who I bought it from) to find the 3rd owner. That 3rd owner was nice enough to provided a flash drive full of pictures taken during the frame off restoration he started (but didn't finish), pictures of what the car looked like when he bought it from the 2nd owner and the name of the 2nd owner. I finally tracked down that 2nd owner and spoke with him a couple of weeks ago. My point is that if you can get one prior owner name, you can do internet searches to find addresses and maybe even a phone number, provided the name isn't a super common one like John Smith. Write letters requesting some of their to to have a friendly about the history of the car. From there follow the ownership chain as far back as possible. One of those prior owners may be able to tell you what happened to the original engine and what HP that original engine was. Good luck

Well from the tach redline and 60# oil gauge your car (if original cluster) was a small block 350HP option, your coupe's final assembly date was March 25, 1965, has body #2358 built on March 17, 1965 from A.O. Smith source, with original paint Silver Pearl and interior was Black Vinyl.

And from that cluster (if original) you know the car was not a big block car and it did not have side exhaust since those questions always come up
