Driving gloves
I was wondering if any of you are wearing driving gloves when driving and if so, what kind?
I was at a classic car event yesterday and almost every driver wore them (mostly european cars). And there are almost as many shops present at such events with hats and gloves as there are with scale models and cleaning products...
I like the look, (don't know about the feel) but for some reason find it harder to choose for a Corvette than for let's say an e-type...
So, what's your favourite pair of gloves, if any?

I think it probably is mostly a European thing although it may have enjoyed some popularity in the US with sports car guys. I suspect with the skinny steering wheels of he era they were actually useful. I always remember the 66 Car & Driver Road Test of the 66 427 and the infamous 12.8 sec quarter, that had a shot of the dash and drivers arms and hands on the wheel while at speed - and he had on leather driving gloves.
But no, I don't wear them.

The only time I wear gloves when I'm driving is when I have the roof off and it's under 40 degrees. Not very stylish though, and I usually have my stocking hat on as well. The driving gloves and the Piloti shoes are more for the Pebble Beach wine and cheese crowd IMO. Just not my cup of tea.

Don't come to any events I frequent (non pasta-rocket venues) and walk about with your dorky driving gloves. Nobody will take you seriously nor engage you in any meaningful conversation. Of course, if you wear goggles and a scarf, now that's something else
IMO, unless you have some orthopedic problem, or, just came from a racing event, driving gloves are an affectation....nothing more

Makes me think they don't want to soil or damage their dainty skin driving an old car. I have been given driving gloves for various occasions over the years. I have never nor will I ever wear them unless I'm stealing a car and don't want to leave any fingerprints.

Safety Car
Way back the '60's I had a pair to drive my MG around. That was the last time I ever owned dorky gloves. Now real racing gloves that's a different question.

When you're driving hard enough to lose a hubcap, I guess you earned the right to wear 'em

My wife bought me one of those caps in some sort of plaid - I remember they were sometimes referred to as "go to hell" caps - don't know why Not me - she doesn't understand why I won't wear it driving the Vette or the Cobra replica.

I would sell every car I own, before someone would see me driving around wearing some stupid pair of driving gloves, unless for a medical reason like sun protection. Yes I wear them at the track, do not drive my old cars in the cold like Capevetts.....

Anyway, I've never felt right wearing gloves since back when Michael Jackson was touring the country with one glove on singing "Beat It"....

When racing and sweating they are good. When it is cold enough to justify or if you live in AZ sometimes the plastic wheel gets so hot you can't touch it without them.
If there is a purpose for them fine if you are doing it just for the look it is pretentious.

Driving Glove is Practical
Way before Michael Jackson did the one glove thing (gotta keep the other hand free for ...) I kept a pair of gloves in the Vette. When the car sat in the sun with the windows up (black top, black interior) the chrome shift ball would get hot enough to just about peel skin off. I either wore a glove on my right hand or just slipped the glove over the shift ball until it cooled off.

Melting Slicks
I think that if there's a "good reason" for them, like any type of garb, by all means, wear them.
Hell, I've been known to wear my motorcycle gauntlet gortex lined gloves, while on my riding lawnmower when it's cold outside.
