Its clear hard anodized from the factory. Looks aluminum color.
Edit. It looks like hard anodized aluminum, though i suppose it could be some sort of paint, but... anodizing was a cheap, very effective way to protect aluminum from corrosion, and aluminum often doesn't take paint well without proper prep, which is more expensive.

The hard top on my 56 is an EXTREMELY late 56 or EXTREMELY early 57 and it is anodized alum.

It's for sure not paint.. It's some sort of anodizing process like they use on the 63 consoles or the long alum sill plates. I would guess that guy that restores consoles can do it.

Thanks everyone. You have confirmed what I thought I was looking at.
I have started to sand the scratches out of the header where you will see the aluminium and sanded through what I thought was a coating.
I will get it re anodised when I have sanded and polished it.
