[C2] 1964 Trim Tag Survey
#41
Safety Car
The 899P TRIM code shows White leather with red dash, red console and red rugs. Interesting there is only one letter, where the book shows codes PA, PB etc thru PR have all the ECL options that came with the car. Only one letter ''P'' as A.O. Smith did not know what options were on the car..
Pretty combination however.

I have been doing research on 1964 Trim tags and I have a good start on a database. I am surveying both Coupes and Convertibles.
1964 was the first year GM used A.O. Smith manufactured bodies and there were many running changes made during the 64 Model year.
There were 22,229 Corvettes made in 1964 and I have 1125 entries in my data so far which is 5% of the total population.
I started with the C2 Registry and information from Nolan Adams. I have collected much of the information from publicly available sales.
I am looking to expand the information. I will share it with other 1964 Corvette Owners who are interested in adding to the data.
If you are interested in sharing your information and access to my info, send me a PM. I need your email address, the VIN # and a clear picture of your trim tag. It would be helpful if you share a picture of your VIN tag (not necessary, but preferred)
I am also gathering info on sill plate, grab bar, roadster top, and raised door handle details. If you supply this info, I'll enter it too.

I have sorted the information I have gathered first by Coupe/Convertible and then by VIN sequence. The NCRS Authentication Library does not associate a VIN with the trim tags depicted.
Nolan Adams' book does a great job. I've captured his survey on trim tags in my information.
Please don't think I'm trying to replace or compete with that publication.
I am focused on 1964 and I am not gathering any other year.
The Authors did excellent work. But It doesn't get into the body build sequence numbers with respect to the VIN sequence.
I have found interesting usage of early/late EC codes and variations in the tags by cataloging the info. Like I said in my first post.....lots of changes took place in 1964, and they are reflected in the Trim tags.

Help from Corvette nuts
Hello,
I have an offer of a really great 64 Fuelie, but the trim plate looks not original.
I am no expert, so I need a little help
My opinion is, that the VIN plate could be true but the trim plate looks not original.
Best regards from Germany
Oliver

The data on the trim tag lines up with other cars in the survey and the tag is plausible. I do not have a lot of information on Coupes in and around that specific VIN range.
Looking at the condition of the trim tag, It appears to be in "like new" condition. The VIN tag shows its age and has "patina" The trim tag is an aluminum plate while the VIN tag is Stainless Steel. I would expect similar patina on an adjacent soft aluminum plate.
I would refer you to the NCRS Publication "Authentication Library" written by Al Greening and Roy Sinor. The work of the authors looks at known original trim tags and compares the stamped characters.
I am not an expert on the qualities and characteristics of a factory stamped trim tag. I would say that the authors of this publication are the experts.
Is the pictured Trim Tag a reproduction? I would ask the seller that question. I would also look for other supporting documentation to establish the true build configuration of this car. Does the seller have any original dealership paperwork from the "Deal Jacket"?

As turbodave231 said the tag appears to be too new looking, also if you
note the period after DIV. should be located directly above the first T in
Detroit. The entire Detroit Mich seams shifted to the left to far. Just an opinion I am also not an expert.

There are lots of things to check, but I usually start with the phrase "BODY BY CHEVROLET" at the bottom of the tag. Look at the letter "D" in the word "BODY" and the letter "H" in the word "CHEVROLET".
An original tag has the "D" in what I think of as a stepped curve. The letter "H" has a noticeable curve to the right side of the right leg.
Here is an exaggerated sketch of what I am talking about.
The NCRS Authentication Library Vol 1, GM Issued 1963-1967 Corvette Trim Tags is a good investment.

It is a really nice Fuelie Tanker in great color combo.
But like my first feeling I thought that the trim plate is too new. With your information I can make the right decision.
I think I cancel the deal, because I only look for real deals.
Thank you for help and best regards from a German Corvette nut

That car was for sale in 2009 listed as a blue vinyl interior car. Maybe it was listed incorrectly I really can't say.
