Advisement Needed on '67 Sting Ray
Guys, one of you brought a nice looking '67 Sting Ray to my attention as a possible purchase. It is owned buy a private seller, and I have worked with him to authenticate the color, trim, options, and drive train.
Since I am a novice, I wanted to bring it to the forum to get your input. I will be supplying pictures of the over all car, vin and trim plates, window sticker and tank sticker, POP, and a picture of the engine pad.
According the doc, it is supposed to be a true Marina Blue California car, with the original drive train. I have checked the numbers through pictures, and the motor and components appear to be correct.
It does not have the California Emissions pieces, and side-pipes were added somewhere along the way. It was restored approx. 10 yrs. ago, but there is little documentation to prove it. My feeling is, after 10 years you would want to judge it on it's current condition anyway.
As I consider all of your comments, if it is positive I would hire one of you to appraise the car for me prior to my going out to see it for myself. Me living in IL. and the car's location is NJ.
So, I will start with a few shots of the car to give you an idea of what it looks like. He says these pictures are recent, but I need to ask him how recent.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Steve

Here are the pictures of the vin and trim tags, window sticker and tank sticker and engine pad.
A couple of more remarks about the car...the current owner bought it from a guy in Canada, and the restoration was a frame on with paint job, re-chrome of bumpers, polished stainless, and complete rebuild of engine, trans, and rear gear.

I definitely do not like the pad, and I don't think I like the tank sticker either.
The good thing about the tank sheet and window sticker is that they are complete (not missing any data sections); therefore the NCRS document validation service can tell you if they are real.

Agree with SupremeDeluxe on his comments:
For a very high end car like this, I would have NCRS validate the documents, Al Grenning validate the engine pad, and an experienced NCRS or Corvette person personally inspect the car. There are plenty of folks around NJ/NY to do this in-person inspection. Chuck Berg is one of these guys.....lives in Virginia. Phone (703)629-0206. However, there are many guys, probably living even closer that can do this job.
The engine pad letter and number fonts do not look right in this photo, although it could just be the photo angle. But it raises doubt for me based on the single photo. The tank sticker also looks suspect. There are a number of very high quality reproduction window stickers available for $$$$$$ if you search. But I cannot say if it is original or reproduction from the photo shown.

The delivery dealer, Central Chevrolet in Fremont, got my attention since I lived in Fremont for over 50 years. I knew that dealership very well and bought a number of cars from them over the years. Unfortunately, they closed in 2008 after being in business since the '30s.
Out of curiosity, I Googled the address of the original owner - 4344 Gina St - per the POP and found that street number doesn't exist. Also checked the Alameda County records and there is no 4344 on Gina Street. So, was it a typo by the dealer or is it a made up POP???
Like others have recommended, if you're considering spending big money on this car, do a thorough investigation and inspection.

I went back to my files and found pics and other info from 1967 car # 21,135. This car in my files was a 327/350 HP small block car. This car should have been produced 2-3 days later than the blue car.
The engine pad VIN stamping numerals are definitely different and the tank sticker hand written number (351) is also off by a few numbers from the example in my files. I would expect more consistency in these areas for only a 2-3 day difference. In your blue car case, the 351 is exactly 500 different from the last three numbers of the VIN. In my example, this is not the case. It is also not the case for most of the 1967 cars built during that model year..........as I have quite a few records on these cars. This number difference moves around during different times of the year. NCRS officials and Al Grenning both know this, and much better than me.
Again it raises more doubt in my mind about the documentation and stampings. NCRS and Grenning should be able to clear it up for you. And a personal inspection from a knowledgeable 1967 Corvette guy should provide additional knowledge and experience on body and frame fit and condition and on VIN and Trim Tag originality.

But, if you go to street view, it will point to 4345. Look at the even side of the street, the addresses go 4330 - 4346 - 4354. I also went to the Alameda County (Fremont is in Alameda County) property assessment information page (http://www.acgov.org/MS/prop/index.aspx) and the address could not be found. Also, no recorded documents for a Haskall, Robert (may or may not be significant). I know Fremont pretty well after living there for 54 years.

Its beautiful...looks like it was just finished...
B/L: I can't ever recall seeing a legit L79 car without NCRS being mentioned somewhere, somehow...just too much money at stake and guys that have the real deal want that stamp of authenticity...especially when they go to sell.
I agree with Powershift, have someone in the know look at it.
