Bill, I did not have to remove the seats or the deck. It is a pita getting that cover to fit back on the new tank.

Yeah, my lid was not installed when I did it. The hinges were installed. I think you should be find with what you have done. I think the newer gas tanks are more size correct.
The straps are a a pain too. I used longer bolts to get them started (if you are not using your old ones) then torqued them down. From there you can replace the bolts with the correct ones or simply cut of the excess from underneath if you do not care to use the correct bolt heads.
As said earlier add an extra ground from the sending unit to the frame. It will help make sure the sending unit reads correctly.
Also, you might want to bench test the sending unit (if you did not buy another one) just to make sure it reads correctly before installing it.

Come on... it isn't that hard at all.
Drain the tank, I used a siphon hose .
Spray the bolts and let them set a day or two (if needed).
Remove the wiring, vent hose and filler hose. leave the sender in.
Lift the aft up and pull to the right side to clear the neck. This can be done with seats full forward and deck lid on easily.
Take your time, I used my original tank and straps. Since they were bent to fit already. It took less than an hour, - It took longer to take the cover off.
Ad the extra ground is a great idea, I did that too. But to test the gauge is different story. I put 5 gallons and bent the arm on the sender to read 1/4 then added 4 more and checked for 1/2 tank, Mine reads tad low so when I am less than 1/4 I know the fun is over soon..

As said above... it's fitting the repro tanks in that is the main problem. They just don't fit, you must bend, test fit, remove, bend, test fit, literally a dozen or more times.

tank went in perfect, took my time no issues just took her for a test run replaced all the hoses wile i was at it . Re used my straps that made it easier.
