Default Six tail lights on a '62? Discussion...

Saw this picture posted on the internet and it reminded me of the "alteration" that my friends '62 had back in the day. I believe this was known as California-style tail lights. Does anybody recall the six tail light look? Excuse the empty beer cans in the picture.

The answer to your question can be found by doing a "Forum Search" on "6 taillights" or "six taillights".

You'll find a wealth of information on this subject. You'll even find out it was/is a "Fad" started not in California, but in Michigan by GM.

Read through the below thread. You will find your answer in 1 or more posts. No need to drag this subject up

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...il-lights.html

But in case you don't like to read old posts, the simple answer is it's mod some of us still do today to 61-67 year models Vettes.

although I know the rear panel shape is the same as a C2, that is the first time I have seen it done on a 61-62

They don't quite fit as nicely over the bumper on a 62 as they do over the C2 bumpers.

I've never seen that on anything other than a C2, either.

Things happen when you drink too much beer <LOL>.

(Just kidding, 6 tail light guys).

Forget the tail lights...how many different brands of beer are in that picture?

I suspect that dude is still passed out.

I would not make that modification myself, but if I acquired a car that had 6 I would not "un-do" the change. It was considered a very cool thing "back then" and still is an eye-catcher today.

That was a VERY common modification back in the day. I remember seeing that done to several Vettes------------------------along with various other mods that were done back in those days.

I agree that the 6 lights always looked great. Mazmanian's '61 drag car had them when it was near brand new. The photo appears to be the real deal, all vintage 'church-key' steel beer cans that were pretty much gone by '67-'68.....when 'pop-top' pull-tabs were introduced. I can see several brands: Lucky, Schlitz, Busch, Lone Star, Pabst Blue Ribbon, and Bud.

LOL and my car fits your statement very well. 2 lights nothing wrong just to me the extra light fills out the back better. now that is just me.

I saw one or two who used electrical parts from....a Cougar maybe?...to make the tail lights sequential - first the inboard, then the middle, and finally the outboard so they were all lighted, with each flash.

With today's technology we take stuff like that for granted. But the first time you saw it back then, it was awesome.

yes, it was the Cougar; the sequencer was an electric motor driven switch.....

I have never been a fan of the 6 tail light Corvettes but if I had one it would definitely be sequential. But then again I have a 1966 Dodge Charger with them. As far as I know they where first used on a 64 or 65 T-Bird. When new a friend of mine's dad bought a new 66 Charger that had them. I thought they were cool and original. I didn't find out until years later that they were an owner request from the dealer when new. That just goes to show you how the myths get started about those kinds of things.
