50 years ago today, my very first car
My first car love was a friend's 65 GTO. I was second in line to buy it if he ever sold. The time came and he said he gave the guy who had asked first until 6PM July 2nd to come up with the money. (I might mention that he, and the GTO, were in Michigan.) Meantime I went out looking and found a '59 Vette locally which I liked.
At 5PM Jim called and said the guy had just bought the Pontiac, so by 7PM I had a friend driving me to get the Vette. That was a story in itself - no license plates, and did I mention I had not yet learned to drive a stick shift?
But bottom line, the car found its way to my parents home thanks to a couple friends who "loaned" their tags, and followed right behind to hopefully provide a buffer lest a cop follow and find a reason to pull it over.
Amazing what $1050 would buy back then, even considering the hard top came along later. "Only" a 283/230 3 speed but I sure wish I still had it. Where it is now is a mystery, not in the NMVTIS and may well have been junked years ago. I should have taken more pics of it back then, only have about a half dozen. So I've posted this one in the past but here it is again.

Cool story. I remember when I bought my first corvette too, but it was only 8 years ago. Congrats and she still looks as great now as then

Great looking Vette I'm sure you wish you kept it. I feel very fortunate to still have my first Vette.

Back then, the only thing I cared about was acceleration. When I had the chance to buy a '67 427/400 in almost new condition, there was no contest. Yes, the '67 was fantastic, but at this stage of my life that old 230hp would be just as much fun. (wall, ALMOST just as much fun! )

You are lucky to have such a good picture from that far back. I have a few pictures of my early cars but many of them have suffered and faded over the years. Wish I had taken a lot more back then. Good looking car.

Mike, that is sure true, I still have a 55-Tbird that I bought in 1970 and a 70 Continental MKIII, I bought new in 1970 as well as the 60 Vette that I bought July 4th, 1980, however I've let a couple get away, my first street car was a new 58 Impala conv. and I had a Fairlane Thunderbolt with a OHC 427 CID engine in it, I sold it 1970.

Very nice! I was 50 when I bought my first Corvette. My first owned car was a 1953 Ford Custom with a six-cylinder and an automatic given to me by my grandfather in 1964 for my eighteenth birthday.

Fifty years ago I bought my first - and only - Vette...a '62 that cost $1600 but also had a hardtop Last year - at 4 different Cruises - four guys gave me their business cards and said that I had been a "caretaker" long enough and said it was "time to sell" ...am considering

In 68' I bought a 60' with both tops. It was a 283, but, I don't know the h.p. It had the fuelie badge, but, it had a Holley on top. Yes, they were cheap back then, considering! I learned a lot wrenching on that car, plus, many skinned knuckles. It started my love to own Vettes.

Nice first car and good story to go with it Don. Funny how retirement can be so busy but it's better than being bored I guess. Still, like you say, get that project regardless.

The fondest memories never fade and the old pictures even while deteriorating help to keep them fresh.
That said keep looking for that C2 project.
