I definitely didn't get those lug nuts with the latest virginia Vette wheels so I have to assume using the standard lug nuts is ok.

Steve,

Which wheels do you have?

Looks like the latest gen of aftermarket wheels use standard lug nuts.

Ed - here's a photo of my wheel. They came with the car so I don't know how old they are. They're stamped "KH Western" on the back.

If you measure across the points of your lug nuts and the measurement is less than what I posted, they probably won't interfere with your starburst retainer clips.

Keep in mind that no matter how you mount your wheel, there will only be one lug nut with the potential of interfering with one of your clips.

Western Wheel quit making the bolt-on reproductions in the late 1980's. Another company called KMC was used by Corvette America to make the wheels after this time.............although the extended length lug nuts continued to be used.

Check the numbers on the inside of the wheel. That should tell you. But Western started making these wheels around mid-1970 and went thru late 1980's. That should give you a rough approximation (30-40 years old).

When I had to replace my starburst last year, none the of the usual vendors had ones with black paint between the fins. All I could find was gray. A little research revealed the older ones had black and the newer ones had gray.

ZIP, where I bought the replacement, says in their catalog that all repro wheels changed to the original color gray after April 1, 2009.

If you have the repro wheels that use the long cylindrical sleeve-type lug nuts and flat washers (and 7/8" hex), here's how you avoid having to carry two lug wrenches. Just weld a regular 3/4" hex lug nut to a 7/8" socket, so your stock 3/4" lug wrench works for everything.
