C2 Special or Non-standard Paint Codes?
Of the 50 plus non-standard or special order paint codes for the C2's,
I'm curious if any of them are owned by members here?
The correct number is a little vague as there is no listing for the '63 model year for non-standard paint.

I have never heard of it being kept track of.
Back in the day the auto manufacturers would paint a car any color you wanted if you were willing to wait the extra time they required. I don't know about GM but when it happened with Mopars the fender tag (somewhat similar to a trim tag) showed either a 99 or 999 paint code depending on the year of the vehicle regardless of what the color was. In other words there was no way to determine from the tag what the color actually was. This was very common for fleet vehicles such as utility companies. Have you ever heard of Omaha Orange? It was a very common utility color beginning in the 50s and is the same color as several Oranges later used for standard colors similar to Hugger Orange.
Also some of the Shriners in the past ordered Corvettes in special colors.

I've never heard of a number of 50 special order colors. But there are many things I don't know. Where does 50 even come from?

Mike Antonick's black book lists production numbers on colors and mentions non standard colors or primer. He mentions nothing non standard for '63. I do know of at least a few '63 styling cars that were non factory colors and a primer car. For '64 the book states 24 had non standard paint or primer. Five such cars in '65. Eleven in '66 and ten in '67. So maybe that is where the op found his number of 50. Here is a picture of my '66 that was delivered from the factory in primer. This is the car that has it's trim tag pictured in M.F. Dobbins '63-'67 fact book.

Curious....
Does the car show any signs of being painted after delivery? I Wonder what the original purchaser wanted, that wasn't in the standard vette catalog....

I use to know a guy in upstate NY, with a special paint, 64 coupe. The paint code on the trim tag only showed "SPEC", with no actual paint code specified on the tag. When disassembled for restoration, the car appeared to be painted silver, and by the amount of metallic in the paint, he believed the car may have been painted 63 Cadillac Frost Silver (Fire-Frost paints proceeded 64's Firemist paints). Of course, without any documentation, it's impossible to know or prove, what color the car was originally painted. It was an interesting car, loaded with PS, PB, AC, PW, AM/FM, back up lamps, tint and Powerglide, but powered by the base 327/250 engine.
In the early 70's, there was a Corvette club in the DC area (Sting of the Rays???). One of the members owned a custom paint shop, and did a lot of custom painted Corvettes for other members. Instead of repainting new Corvettes, he had a connection at a local Chevrolet dealer, who would order Corvettes in primer for him. I saw at least three 72-73's that he painted, that had "PRIMER" listed as the paint code.

Yes, as provette pointed out, the numbers I mentioned are listed in the Black Book, no mystery there.
provette, thanks for the info and picture. Has your car been left in primer all these years? Also, what does your trim tag show?
Thanks, Greg

provette67,
Do any pictures exist of your car painted in the '66 Buick Shadow Turquoise? If so, could you share one?
And did the the trim tag reflect that GM color or did it say SPEC or was it simply left blank?

Back in the mid 70s to 1984 I owned a 72 coupe that was a special order paint car. The trim tag read SPEC for the paint code. It was supposedly one of a group of roughly 25 cars that was ordered in black by a group of Chevrolet dealers in Western Michigan. Wish I still had that car.

you could get any paint color in the GM paint color book. I had my 62 corvette painted anniversary gold a non corvette color. I have several new chevys painted non standard colors. if you want to see what happens when you show up with proof of a special color goggle 1969 evening orchid Z/28 and the expert says it never happened.

Those "experts" probably are not even old enough to know what took place when those cars were new. I sold Dodges and AMCs new from 1968-1974 and have hands on experience with all of that.
