Default C2 1966

Morning Everyone, Does anyone have a good process to install an engine and transmission in a 1966 C2, 327/standard, convertible. It was a bear to get out. Hopefully someone has an easier process to put everything back in. The radiator and everything has been removed from the engine housing.. Thanks Droop

If it was a bear to get out, maybe you should seek professional help?

If pulling motor and tranny as a unit is tough, pull the tranny first then the engine. Install in reverse order. Lots of room and clearance when you pull the hood off. :-)

What do you mean "WHATTTTT"? If pulling the engine and transmission together is a bear, take the transmission off first while the engine is still in the car, then take the engine out without the tranny.

To reinstall, put the engine in first then crawl under the car and attach the tranny to the engine, after it is in the car.

The hood comment was sarcasm....

Make sense??

This response makes more sense than your first one. In the first one you said to pull the transmission first, then the engine. Your second one, which is what I think you meant to say originally, was to disconnect the transmission, pull the engine and then pull the transmission.

I don't see it as that big a chore. I've pulled the engine and trans as a unit out of my car a couple of times. Just me and a good engine hoist, no other help.

No big thing - I've done engine/trans unit pulls and installs many times, usually working by myself; I put the car on jackstands, pull the left front wheel, come in from the side with the hoist, and use a "tilter".

I wonder if he had a hard time because he didn't put the car up on stands or at least ramps? You need that height to be able to get enough angle to tilt the motor/trans unit enough.
I used to be able to pull my 66 small block out in an hour and a half, no sweat.

We have a lift in the garage and all tools. Cherry picker, tilt, etc. Can you put the shifter linkage on prior to install? The linkage was removed prior to removal of the engine and transmission. The Corvette has been fully restored a while ago, engine and all. Due to a valve seat failure we were forced to pull the motor. We were lucky it happened at idle...As everyone knows it is a lot easier to remove and install the engine and transmission during a body off restoration. We don’t want to DOINK or cause any damage to the fiberglass. Droop

If the problem was a valve or valve seat, why didn't you just pull the heads?

Droop,

Although I have never done it, I don't see why you can't install the shift linkage before install.

Since you are worried about marring the paint, wrap the front of the car with several layers of that large saranwrap-like stuff the movers use to wrap furniture. Then use packing quilts on the tops of the fenders and front of the car.

Exactly! Although not a Mid-year in the pictures, the principle is the same.

Crunch, This is exactly what we needed to see where the Tilter is chained to. When I restored my 1970 and 1961 we did body off on both of the vehicles. Much easier to install components and detail the chassis as well as the body due to them being totally exposed. My neighbor who owns the Corvette thanks you for those photos. They are worth a Million Words Droop
