Default 1957 Corvette VIN location

I did some work a while back on a 57 corvette and now having talks with the owner about buying it . I don't have the car here to check if the serial numbers are there and correct . Won't be going until next week to see it again but I think I remember seeing a serial number tag on the steering column and would that be the only place to look . I thought they put a tag on the drivers door right under the upper hinge . I didn't notice if there was one there or not . Where was the proper place ( or places )from the factory ?

The VIN tag is on the rivers side hinge pillar, with two phillips head screws. The vin number is also stamped twice on the top of the drivers side frame rail, about where the seat bottom is.

No numbers on the steering column under the hood ? What years did this ?

The later C1s got the steering column VIN tags, like the 61/62 - earlier cars did not. I don't know the break in years where the switch occurred.

Supposedly the switch from the door jamb to the steering column was made on the '60 models around VIN #1400.

So maybe it is a later year steering column . I will have to check and see if it in fact does have the tag on the column . I worked on a 54 also and it could have been on that one . Just can't remember . I talked to the owner again today and he said he does have the original tag matching the title which was taken off of the door jamb when the paint was stripped . Apparently they were just installed with two Phillip head screws . Thanks for all of the information.

1954 has the vin tag below the left corner of the windshield just above the courtesy light switch. Not near the hinge like a 57.

Another question . I'm going to look at it Sunday morning and I have been looking at some pictures on line of 57 VIN tags and some have the numbers centered on the tag and some are off to the right with the "E" in the vin number starting just below the "E" in Chevrolet . Anybody know the reason and what is correct ?
