Default C1 (58) confusion on what I own.

Hi, I am new to the forum and have questions on the car I own.
The serial # is J58S107842 which I think means assembled in June, 1958. However I think the engine is not original. In searching numbers on-line it gets very confusing.

Can anyone please let me know what engine I have (mfg date and was it GM or Vette engine)?
Engine stamp is F0123D
engine casting is 3756519
intake manifold casting is 3875954
it has a Rochester QuadraJet 7J42250 0505
it has 4 speed manual with lockout

Please let me know if anyone out there can give me some info on these engine parts.

thanks, Bruce

I'll start with the obvious simple one - Quadrajets were not original on any C1s or C2s.

I'll get out the Colvin book on the other numbers.

The 519 block was used in 59-61, although Colvin says there are unconfirmed reports of some uses in late '58.

Car's approximate birthday is 13 June 1958.

Your transmission has a date code cast into the main case, but should have no VIN derivative stamp which didn't start until 1962.

Your engine stamp indicates built in Flint on 23 January, but no year is given. Look at the rear surface of the block beneath the distributor to find the date that the block was cast. Clearly an engine built in January would not match a "late 58" unless there were some odd anomalies (sometimes it happens, but I don't think the 519 block was made in January 1958).

I don't find where a 954 manifold was used in any 55-82 Corvette. Is it aluminum or cast iron?

That intake is like a 1966 passenger car cast iron Q-Jet intake...

Your engine stamp (D) shows it to be a '58-'62 283 170hp with a 2B and PG from a passenger car. You could narrow it down to which year by finding the casting number as Easy Rhino stated.

Hi Easy Rhino,

I looked again and the manifold is cast iron (not magnetic). However, on looking closer the engine stamp looks more like FOI23D and the engine casting number is 3756619. I do not see a block date cast however. There seems to be a breather tube coming out of the engine just beneath the distributor and I can't see any date stamp.

Anyway, seems from other posts here to my question the engine, intake and carbs are wrong. I bought this Vette back in 1980 and its never seen rain or snow and I only put about 4,000 miles on it since purchase.

How can I find out the correct 1958 corvette 283 engine stamp and casting
numbers, intake manifold casting number and correct Carter carb numbers so I start to try and put this back to some form of original?

I see on the internet there are a lot of sources to get a "numbers correct" 283 for my car, but I first need to know the correct numbers for a Vette born in late June, 1958.

Or would you suggest I go the resto-mod option with a new engine, trans, power steering, disc brakes, etc.? I researching resto-mods it seems they are getting pricing about the same as umbers match C1 Vette's.

Any help would be appreciated. thanks, Bruce

I say keep the hood shut and keep on enjoying your car the way you have for the last 37 years. no mater what engine you put in it. it will NEVER be a original born with engine. if what you have now is in good running order why fix whats not broken and open up a can of worms
