Default Stall speed 2004r

Getting all the ducks lined up to do the PG to 200 trans. swap in my '64. Should I use a 1650 or 1800 stall TC ? Lots of info for a performance torque converter but very little on a bone stock 327/300. Thanks, Dave. PS. Flawless PG will be for sale.

I say you should contact whoever you choose for a converter and get their input.

Default Stall Speed

I would say you should get something similar to what the Powerglide had. 1st gear is going to be a lot lower than what the PG was, so you will not need the additional revs of a higher stall speed converter. You might even need a tighter one.

Just trying to avoid creep at a stop light. Had that with a Ramjet 350 and stock TC. 1800 stall fixed it.

2,000 stall is what I have...if you have a cam with considerable lope 2400-2800 perhaps.

Bone stock 300hp. Maybe 1800-2000 would suffice.

I've been discussing this with BowTie and Art Carr. 1,800-2000 is good. I'm going to go with 2,000 and a lock-up converter with my '67 327/300.

Thanks, Randy. I agree. This info is exactly what I've been looking for.

The lower the stall speed, the better the around town fuel economy, and torque converters typically give a max of 2x torque multiplication at stall. I believe the PG converter stall speed is in the 1800-2000 range, but first gear is only something like 1:82:1.

IIRC the 200R4 first gear is something like 2.84:1 and second gear is close to the PG first. The 327/300 has stump pulling low end torque for its size, assuming an OE equivalent cam.

I'd go with the 1650 stall.

Gear ratios.

According to BowTie the stock stall on later Corvettes was over 2,000 with the lock up. That's the converter I put in my '62 when I installed a 700R4 in it with the 383 stoker. I wished I had gone a little higher.

Thanks, I think it's better to error on the high side. Too tight and you're standing on the brakes at every stop light. BTDT. Sucks.
