[C1] 1961 Brake Lights

1961 Brake Lights
My left side brake lights work fine but the right side does not. The bulbs are fine. I looked at the schematic and I'm thinking that maybe the problem is in the cancelling mechanism in the steering column. Anyone have any other ideas?

That's likely.. Jiggle the turn signal and see if you can get them to light up..
If not if can also be wiring and/or ground connections.

Back up to a reflective surface (white) press the brakes while jiggling the turn signal handle if the dead side flickers or comes on the centering hardware needs tweaked in the canceling mechanism.
Several dozen posts on this and how to correct it - quite common. If you can't find the info I can repost the stuff...

Does the turn signal work on that side? If so, you can eliminate the bulb, wiring and ground and go straight to the turn signal switch. Do the test Frankie suggested above with the ignition OFF. See if any movement of the turn signal gets the right brake light to work, if it does, you'll know for sure.

Never hurts to roll under the dash and make damn sure the wires in these connectors (the two white triangular connectors at center bottom of picture) are pushed in TIGHT. An errant knee or just time can work them loose...

Had one once where the problem was as simple as as a loose Phillips screw used to retain the assembly within the housing. Access was a problem so I used a small Phillips bit and turned its shank with a small open end wrench to tighten the screw.

Exactly why I have this tool with super short bits to adjust the steering column "bell" (with a 1/4" box end wrench)...also superb for precise tuning of dual quads in tight spaces...

Probably not the OP's issue (because both lights on that side are out), but I had 1 light out.. Almost drove myself nuts chasing it down.. Turns out the little spring-loaded contact in the base of the socket had corroded. I had actually used contact cleaner on it to no avail.. Had to get out a file and remove a thin layer of metal from it.. all good after that.
Just adding this as possible solutions for future searchers.
