Isn't there a spec for axle wear? A specific distance from ring grove to axle face?

Tom, I knew what end play was/is, but still don't know how to correct it. I chose not to install the extra snap ring as I was near 0.020 on both sides. Did not change it.
Is there room for a thicker snap ring? I didn't check that. One showed wear, so new one there.

Yeah I wouldn't add an extra snap ring either. As I understand it the end of the axles are hardened to some depth to reduce wear. Once you get through that, wear would occur more rapidly. If there is room to add an extra snap ring I suspect the axle is worn though the hardened tip.

Did you measure the distance from the face to snap ring with the axle out?

No, I did not measure the ends

Are they original axles,
They certainly appeared to be, and showed no visible wear

what year?

1965 3.70 posi

Rebuilt or new?

I believe I was the first to open it up. Purchased in 1973 (64 car) and stored since.

Was the posi rebuilt, if so how? were the holes in the posi case checked for excessive play in the cross shaft, was the shaft replaced?
I only removed the clips and axles. Could not see any wear marks after a thorough cleaning except for the inside face of one axle clip, which I replaced. I did not measure with a dial indicator, but estimated at about 0.020 or less. The few times I drove this back in the day, I observed no issues needing correction FWIW.

If excessive play is found, are you saying the holes in the posi case and shaft are the culprits?

Tks, GTR. I'm just finishing up the chassis and drive line. Body on before the end of the year (planned). So I don't think I'll go back into this one yet. The axles did have the hole in the ends, I remember that. Still showed machine marks, not wear marks on the ends. It is the Eaton posi - 65 model. And yes, I paid $2200 and drove it home 3 hrs away. Thanks for sharing your expertise!

here are some Pics:

I think all of these Posi cages should get the windows and the crossshaft holes radiused and the cage polished to help it live!

Also on a posi, you are going to have the clutch discs heat up and grow about .005 so the end play from the tips to crossshaft measuring with a feeler gauge should not be tighter than that. You don't want the clutches binding and being squashed between the case and the gear!

I won't do it on a snap ring Axle, but some guys to set up the end play and so as not to have to grind the Axle tips, will use a thinner snap ring or thinner c-clip in c-clip modified setups!
