Default Holley Carb Restoration

My 67 L-79 585 single inlet Holley is getting a little "tired" and I would like to have it restored for looks and for performance. Any recommendations on a restorer and what mods might be made to enhance performance? What would be a suitable (better performance) replacement carb should I choose to shelve the 585 after restoration. It would have to allow the correct large round air filter to fit under my stock 67 SB hood.

Thanks

I have had them done directly at Holley, The 'Holley Custom shop' and by Eric at 'vintage muscle parts' ..Happy with both. Google them for contact.

There is no direct bolt on plug and play replacment carb. And I wouldn’t go down that route. I like Custom Rebuilt carbs in NJ. There are other rebuilders

Keith,
Your advice is usually pretty spot on but I have to disagree with this statement. Specialty Parts Direct supplies new Holley carbs for the '67 L79. I have my dated, tired original carb in a box and have a new Holley on the car and it is a direct bolt-on replacement. They are pricey, but they are a very nice product and function as designed. I have used them in the past, as well, and recommended them to many who have had terrific results. I know your position on restoring old carbs and there is a place in our hobby for that, but for the guy who wants a very reliable carb to work everytime he wants to go for a drive...ya just can't beat new.

Understand that. But, the OP asked the question, all I did was supply an answer.

I do intend to have my original date coded 585 not only rebuilt but restored (pretty) and go with the Holley Custom shop. If I go with a new Holley for "catting around", do you recommend a 600 or 650? double pumper or single? and what would you all recommend for an (approximate) correct jetting for a stock L-79 in a moderate climate near sea level.[/B]

why do you need two carbs? the real one lasted 50 years. get it rebuilt correctly by a good shop and go on. I do believe if you send it to Holley they might replace certain parts that will work fine but do not have the same appearance as original. if your looking for adding horse power look at other parts of your engine and leave the carb alone

My 3247 came from Eric at Vintage looking like new. You'd never know it was made in Dec 1965. He runs the rebuild carb on his test engine (I think a 350) prior to shipping. WIll absolutely use him again.

Default Quick Fuel

I went with a Quick Fuel (now owned by Holley) 600 CFM while my original Holley 3367 sits on the shelf awaiting a rebuild. It is an electiric choke model (no worry about that in AZ) and I had to modify the fuel line but otherwise a direct replacement. Runs great (which has kept my Holley on the shelf).

Re-read post #4. You don't need any more CFM than what came with the car from the factory...don't mess with what is already a good thing. You're not going to out engineer the GM boys from back in the day. If you're looking for more power, you need to do much more to the entire engine package then just bolting on a larger CFM carb.

Ok. I'm going to take the advice and restore and continue to use the 585 carb. It is performing well. It really only needs a cosmetic cleanup. What is the best way to clean the gas stains off of the carb (and the aluminum snowflake intake manifold)..Thanks

I'll second that recommendation for Custom Rebuilt Carbs in Middlesex, NJ, have talked to Phillip Cancilla there about several projects, they do top notch work, show quality, flow test and adjust everything and upgrade for modern gas seals/components, and prices reasonable. My 3247 had what turned out to be a warped metering block surface which they repaired and now it runs very well. Shop is 732-356-4333. Photo below is how my original Jan 1966 carb was returned to me after restoration

Brake cleaner works wonders to the intake.

Thanks for the kind words, it's sincerely appreciated.

I do indeed run them on a test engine--it's a 400 SB Chevy that's equipped with a wideband O2 system.

Tcheairs,

Here's a few pics of a 4053 for a `69 Z28 I did a few years ago:

But I feel that away about most part of a restoration. Sometimes the sub asemblys look better then the whole car.

On a side not me what do you suggest on a cleaner to keep them looking like that

Unfortunately there's only so much you can do to preserve the finish. The biggest help is climate controlled storage--excess humidity kills these finishes pretty quickly.

Keep in mind the chromate conversion coating on these carbs is meant to be sacrificial--the finish itself corrodes to protect the parent metal underneath.
