Great write-up. Very informative. Something to consider on my 65.

In post #2 there is a picture of the fuel tank vent. I don't see that when I open the fuel door. Where is that physically mounted?

Maybe my question wasn't clear so I'll try again. I can't tell where 65silververt mounted the fuel vent for the sniper. The last picture in post #2 shows the vent mounted on a ledge. Is that a body seam that is visible when the tank is removed or what? Do I not see it on my car because I have a convertible and 65silververt is a coupe? I'm getting ready to install the Sniper and this is the last piece of the puzzle before I start.

that ledge is not on a convertible, well actually it is, but the rear deck bonds to it, so its not practical to use on a vert...you can make a small l shaped bracket to mount your vent in the same area. I always run a loop in my vent hose to try and keep the fuel smell a little more contained as well.

Chris;

I watched this thread with great interest, as I am think about something similar for my 64 300hp coupe.

Would you be so kind as to post a complete listing of all of the parts that were needed, with part numbers and cost. Also include the parts and effort on anything that you had to make (brackets, etc).

I know that if I went through the thread enough times I could probably figure that all out, but nothing quite beats getting the info directly from someone that has just done it.

I am still sort of contemplating a "fake" C2 style Rochester FI unit with EFI technology, and I want to do a parts vs. cost comparison of the two approaches.

Nice work sir, and thanks.

FYI: The engine I got from you is installed in my 56 BelAir that is currently under restoration. I fully anticipate an EFI conversion for it as well.

i'm going to give a SWAG and say that the sniper is going to be a whole lot simpler than retrofitting the FI as the Sniper is just like bolting on a carburetor , all the rest of the supporting stuff is going to be relatively the same.

This was a great thread. I am in the process of getting all the parts to do the install on my 327/300 65 convertible with side exhausts. I do have a Vintage Air 65 and have modified the engine with different cylinder heads, intake, headers, distributor, etc., so the installation will be slightly different. Once I get started (I'm guessing another 2 weeks before everything I need gets here) I will post pix and part nos just as 65silververt did. So far I am following his lead to the letter. I have ordered the Holley gas tank and all parts per 65silververt's thread. I'm still working through the Holley wiring instructions, but I will start the thread when I get going and document what I do as I go along.. I really don't expect to deviate much from 65silververt's thread.

Sorry for the delayed response.
I will post the part numbers as soon as I have a few minutes to dig through the receipts. Give me a day or so.

Take your time Chris, there is no rush.

Can you be hired to do one of these installations? Pelham isn''t that far away.

Question, why would you install the vent when the tank is vented thru the gas cap? I tapped the fuel vent fitting and put a screw 1/4-20 SS in the hole with gasket sealer on the threads.
Your install motivated me to convert my 64-365 to the sniper. I used my stainless existing fuel line for the high pressure side. Also I have the stock radiator and used a thermostat heat riser with a port for the engine temp gauge. I too had to drill through the cross member for the return line. I could have lifted the body but thats to much work. I made a PVC bushing for the whole in the frame. I painted it black and glued ends on the pipe. This works well. At the moment I'm fabricating SS hard lines for the lines on the engine. I've replaced the braided line on the back of the sniper with a hard line and a tee. I will use the point as the fuel feed. The reason for this is the stock 365 air cleaner won't clear the higher fuel feed ports and still allow for the crankcase breather to the air cleaner.

-I just followed instructions. It said if the vent is included that it is needed. It might be redundant, but better safe than sorry.

-NOTE: If you put RTV sealant on a thread that will be exposed to gas fumes, remove it immediately. It will turn to goo and fall into your tank. How do i know this, because I have seen what happens when someone puts RTV on the fuel filler neck(might have been me 15 years ago).

-As far as the air cleaner, well, i had an original base that was really beat up, so I removed the breather. I have a road draft conversion set up with a PCV valve that i can run to the back of the sniper. Or, I might cut a hold in the air cleaner base and connect the breather hose directly to it. I'll probably just vent the filler tube vent to the atmosphere.

Parts and Part numbers.

Don't order the fittings below until I have time to look back over the part numbers. You should have two pipe thread to AN fittings, two 90degree fittings at the tank, two 45 degree fittings at the throttle body, and two straight fittings at the filter. If you plan to use the stock steel line for a feed or return, then you will obviously need different fittings.

Summit Racing

-02 Sensor bung: SUM-G2990
-DER-98452 1/2 Male x 3/8 Female fitting 1
-AAF-ALL40306 Fuel Pump Block off Plate
-SUM-220690N 6AN Hose end Straight (x2)
-SUM-220690B -6AN Black Hose End x4
-SNE-19-147 Sniper Fuel Tank
-TFS-23000 Fuel Filter
-SNE-550-511 Sniper EFI Kit
-SUM-220687N 6AN Hose end 90 degree (substitute 2 45 degree fittings at throttle body if you are going to run the lines like I did.
-AER-FBM5004 -06AN Adapter Black
-AER-FCA0620 -6AN Hose 20 FT Length [B] (NOTE: I ended up needing another 6 feet) If you are going to use the stock steel line for the feed or the return, then you will not need as much hose.
-LOK-BAG-6165 Billet Throttle Pedal
-LOK-TC-1000HT Throttle Cable
-AER-FBE2004 Male to AN pipe connector x2

Thanks Silververt. I use the Permatex aviation sealant on the threads. The silicone type I only use on water systems.

Gotcha. The instructions recommend Indian Shellac compound. I've only had to use that product once, but it seems to work very well.

I believe the vent supplied with the Sniper is valved so that gas doesn't leak in the event of a rollover.

As far as an option for a gas tank, consider one from Tanks, Inc (link)

Tank is $275 + 135 for the sending unit + 65 for the filler neck + 210 for a fuel pump. I've used them on several projects and they're good stuff. You can shop them on Jegs.com and sometimes get better pricing and always free shipping.
