NCRS Winter Regional - Who is Going? Check in the Southeast Events
I opened a thread in the Southeast Events for those going to NCRS Winter Regional at Lakeland.
Check in there if you are going so that we can see everyone without having to hunt around the entire CF to find out.

I will make some comments as maybe facts will help your understanding of where the future lies. Ed had a meeting with board members and feel we made our case for 2019.
Our first obligation is to the NCRS members who desire to have their cars judged. In selecting a site venue we have to consider cost as well as location and site staff support.
The Lakeland site has every other location beat in all categories except hotel locations. Its a seven minute commute from at least 6 hotel with rates from $75 to $175 a night. They are not next door but its not an unreasonable distance.
Had we moved with Mecum, the judging would be in an expensive tent and the venders would have been his venders not ours, and there are no adjacent hotels there either.
I knew 5 years ago where the swap meet was going and there was no remedy that would change this trend. Even Carlisle whose primary business is a swap meet is having the same problems, we are getting old and the cars have gotten so complex and better that restoring a c-3, c-4 is just not what the younger generation wants to do. They only have to wait and let the prices of c-5,6,7 drop to what they can afford.
Our event will always have s swap meet component that has at least 1 vender, Al Knoch.
We are moving the date to the 3rd week so Mecum is not a factor.
Our NCRS registrations for 2017 was 279, the closest Regional was Texas at 199. Because of the National being in Las Vegas all eastern Regionals will be down in 2018.
2017 events
Texas 199 52 cars
Northwest 88 27 cars
tri State 160 58 cars
Southern Calif 147 45 cars
Heartland 148 35 cars
Florida 279 45 cars
The one thing this event has always been is a Public event, In the past we could depend on the swap meet+NCRS judging to bring in the public and the Corvette guy. To this end we have reached out to other car clubs (Street Rods and Corvette Clubs) with limited success. Our street rod show is growing but the Corvette clubs in this area will not 'support' NCRS in spite of the fact NCRS has no desire to be the principal in the Saturday event. We will survive but unless the Corvette community gets over its NCRS hang-up the vender count will be 50 or so, and a very successful street rod event put on by Central Florida Street Rods which we will promote to bring in the public.

I won't make it this year....wife scheduled a long-promised cruise to celebrate her successful knee replacement and 65th birthday last summer....when the meet was moved up from its usual spot at the end of January there was a conflict....and I understand (and been told) what my priorities are
First one I will have missed since 2008 IIRC..
I may try to make this as a back up plan though - it would definitely be interesting:

Has anyone else heard the rumor (fact?) that this will be the last Florida Regional ?

I don't know how true it is, but I was told that the National has told the Florida Chapter, that they have to find a different place to have it, if they want to put on another Winter Regional.
The rumor is that the National is not happy that both the car count and attendance, have been way down since the move to Lakeland. I also understand they'd like a location with more reasonably priced hotels nearby.
I wasn't surprised to hear any of this. Anyone who's been a regular on this Forum, knows that the Lakeland location has never been very popular. To me, the cost and availability of rooms, is no different than going somewhere like Carlisle, but a lot of people have looked at the Winter Regional as a mini family vacation, and Lakeland doesn't offer that.
Personally, I think moving the show from it's traditional dates of the third and forth weekends of the month, to the second weekend, has really hurt it too. I suspect that it was to coincide with Mecum, though everyone denies it.
I still haven't decided whether I'm taking my trailer down, or just throwing a few parts in my truck.

I don't know if there is any 'fallback' position; Old Town is prob out for sure (lots of reasons), the Orlando Convention Center is dead nuts in the middle of the tourist corridor and rent is prob outrageous, Florida fairgrounds attract an unsavory element.
Guess we'll see what happens...

I'll miss visiting and having a beer and seegar Paul! Otherwise you probably won't miss much not being there.
Will be looking forward then to our annual trek to Carlisle much later in the year.
Happy New Year!

Right out of the Dec Chapter Newsletter.
http://www.ncrsfl.org/newsletters/NCRSFl_Issue18.pdf
The quote from Ed A. is "With much regret, I need to inform the chapter members and others that as of this writing, this will be the last Regional Event at Lakeland, Florida. An application was made for 2019 and was declined by the National Board and we were asked to seek a new location in Florida for possible consideration for approval in 2019."
Frankly, I think it sucks, but I won't go there.

I read the newsletter and for the writer to simply blame the dwindling numbers of the show on an aging demographic is taking a simplistic view of the problem. I attend all types of car events and from what I have seen, the crowds at those events are larger than ever.
