Default C-1 fiberglass fuel tank cover

I've had my '62 for 30 years now and never gave it a second thought that I didn't have the fiberglass fuel tank cover. Even after restoration of my '62 I never was concerned about missing the cover. However, recently I was looking for a small project to keep me busy over the winter months. While inspecting the surrounding fuel tank area I noticed that there were no drill holes to attach the mounting screws for the cover. So, is the fuel tank cover held on by clips, and how necessary is this fiberglass cover anyway?

Canuk is right about the screws.. but mine (early 61) has no j-clips.. they screw right into the fiberglass. I believe there is some sealant applied as well.
I can think of 2 functions it performs: (1) It keeps gas fumes and road smells out of the cabin, and (2) It makes a place for the folded soft top to sit (there is a felt cover to protect the plastic window from scratches)

Good luck with your project.

Not if it's a hard top only car.

So, do the screws fasten directly on to the J clips or should the screws screw directly into the fiberglass around the fuel tank?

ALL of them had "J" nuts. NONE were screwed directly into the fiberglass. #10 sheet metal screw. Along the front edge is a steel reinforcement (doubler). These were 10 X 24 machine screws, tapped into the metal brace.

59 AIM Section E sheet 4 part number 274616. 62 AIM Section E sheet 4 part number 3715590. These are sheet metal J nuts, and they were used on all 56-62 cars. None were screwed directly to the fiberglass. That would be Bubba. amd Snake is correct.......A hardtop "only" car had no felt.

Any advantage to ordering a hardware kit from the usual catalogs or just going to my local hardware store?

My (early) 61 has been in the family since new. The cover was never removed until I took it off a few years ago to replace the tank. There were no clips present. Bubba was not here!

Maybe just ran out of clips at the factory that day??? But no clips on my original 1-owner car.

Don't know about your car. This is right out of the 61 AIM. "J" clips are marked in red.

Yes, I have the '61 AIM as well.. And I have found a handful of discrepancies in it.. most of them involve use of '60 configurations in my early '61.

One example: My '61 has an all-metal fuel line. '61 AIM shows a rubber segment. '60 shows all-metal.

I don't want to pick a fight, but I do want to make a point. If your "original" one owner car doesn't have the clips, that's fine with me. The point that I'm making, is that every AIM from 56-62 shows "J" clips at the marked points. So that means that they were "supposed" to be there according to the AIM. It's not a matter of one year vs. another, they ALL had clips. 56, 57, 58, 59, 60 61, 62. I just went through each of those assembly manuals. The OP asked how to install the cover. The answer is in the book. Your car is different, in your opinion. Leave it at that.

Agreed!
Just mentioned it as a point of interest on how the factory operated.

Have you indeed quizzed all of the family members that had custody of this car regarding this issue?

Is you dad still with us? How is his memory?

As others have indicated It is not weather individual deviations from the norm exist, it is what people will accept IF you are having the car judged or want to challenge others in situations like this.

Like Mike, I have had a bunch of C1 cars of all years apart over the years,
and have never seen one that did not have "J" nuts. Just saying....
