These heads were virgin SB400 heads that we had worked over for the SB400 we built for my son's 73. With the 76cc chambers and flat top pistons, the comp should be around 10:1, just right for pump gas! They did NOT get a full port and polish (that would really jump the price up), but simply had the the bowls and runners smoothed out with all the rough casting areas removed and gently blended. Screw-in studs and guide plates were added as well as Comp Cams roller tip rockers. The smoothing and blending that was done produces about 80% of what a full port and polish will achieve. Thus, this will result in greatest amount of air flow improvement. Is it worth the money??? That is a question each person will have to deal with. My son found the 400 for $250 (carb to pan), which today is a steal for a rebuildable SB400 core!
The main reason we went this way is because the SB400 we built was a complete, fully rebuildable 73 SB400 (and dated BEFORE the car was built). YES, YES, YES I know, a SB400 was NOT available in 73 Vettes. But with everything we did, it will shame a 70 LT1 350! And it is a pure bolt-in swap for any smaller small block. Just too easy of a swap!
