It's "bourdon tube".

Update.......

Checked voltage on the battery at 2500RPM. Got almost 18V. Replaced old Delco Remy 515 with a NAPA part. Rechecked and now maxes out at 14.4 so it looks like problem identified and solved. Will run the knock off VR for now and take a drive and see if the temp gauge issue is corrected which I am pretty sure it will be.

Plan now is to convert the Delco to electronic down the road.

Thanks for all the good tips and have a great weekend!

BINGO!

Good news, and avoided many other problems down the road. Check your points for pitting if you still use points.

Took a good 30 mile drive today and temp seems to be rock steady. So problem solved.
Will check points to make sure they are ok. Probably are as I have parked it since the problem showed up and drove less than 20 miles.

Thumbs up to all.

Glad we could help. At 18 volts the regulator was stuck or shorted driving the alternator to full output. It may have been trending in that direction for a while. If you have a flooded cell battery with removable caps pull and check the level. Overcharging will boil them dry.
