It is smart to flush the system about every two years. DOT4 is a common and well trusted fluid for street driven cars. Dennis

DOT3 and DOT4 are interchangeable, with DOT4 having better performance (higher boiling point).

It's DOT5 that is the odd one.. Silicone based.. Can't be mixed with others.

DOT 5.1 is the latest version of glycol based brake fluid. Compatible with DOT 3/4 and with higher boiling point.

Motul 600 (or 660) for the street (both brake and clutch) and Castrol SRF for the track. There are NO substitutes!

Not so fast here. Investigate using Dot 5 for it's many advantages over the stuff that absorbs water and rusts/corrodes everything in your brake system along with eating the paint down to glass and then a repaint won't stick.

You Dot 3,4 5.1 guys aint gettin' off that easy.

True.. the OP didnt' say if it's a new fill, or a 'top off'.

MikeM is right in that our old cars (without ABS) are good candidates for DOT5.. but you can't just add it to DOT3,4,or 5.1. They are incompatible. You have to fully flush the system when switching between them.

If topping off, the key is to use the same TYPE fluid as you already have.

Also, maybe I'm paranoid, but I don't like using 'old' brake fluid from a container that has been open for a long time (years). It can absorb moisture sitting on the shelf too!

Also take note that just because the fluid in your MC isn’t purple, that doesn’t mean it’s not DOT 5.

The jar jon the right is brake fluid that came from the rear well of my MC mixed with water. The jar on the left is fluid from the front well mixed with water. What I think happened is that the shop where I took the car to be serviced right after I bought it saw the yellow fluid in the front well, assumed it was DOT3, and topped it off. This mistake cost me a lot of money. So, if you don’t know for sure what you have, put a small amount in water and see what it does. The purple color of DOT 5 is just a dye. My fluid must have been really old.

Hey guys. What about the wmart stuff? It's called Vtech. Its DOT3, but does not say anywhere on the container about it being synthetic. Just happened to have some on the shelf and need to top my '78's fluid. I have read some place that all DOT 3 and 4 are synthetic. What do y'all think? You know that wmart does not make their own fluids , batteries or anything else. Just saying.

All brake fluid is synthetic, as is DOT 5, but DOT 5 is also silicone based. DOT 3, 4, and 5.1 are glycol based and can be mixed. DOT 5 CAN NOT be mixed with DOT 3, 4 or 5.1.
