Tell me about 327/350 carb substitutes
Not looking for an expensive, original matching numbers carb. I am not even sure how the original was configured. Double pumper? Vacuum secondaries? I have a new to me 65 coming with the original 327/300 that I will likely dress as a 350 h.p. car. I already have the factory intake, oil fill tube, etc. I want a carb with good street manners. I have always liked vacuum secondaries for this reason.
Also wondering how the original 300 h.p. cam will do with this change?
What do you suggest?

I picked up a service replacement Holley 2818-1 in great used condition, correct for a '65 L76, on the parts for sale forum for around $200 and change. Only "wrong" about it is the date, but that mismatching date probably saved me at least $600.
The 300hp used the Carter AFB, IIRC.

Yes, I am aware. May change the cam later. Was just wondering if there is an real world users that have done this without the cam change and how it performed.

here is a basic 650 cfm, electric choke, vacuum secondaries 4150 series carburetor. Some what larger than the original to work with a slightly more aggressive camshaft.

My thoughts FWIW, use the stock AFB, it's a great carburetor for your engine.
If you want to dress it up some install a set of the Corvette aluminum valve covers and polish your radio shielding and save your $$$.
Enjoy your car.

I already have an original pair of aluminum valve covers, 350 h.p. manifold air cleaner and associated parts in my parts collection. Will the original AFB bolt pattern fit the 350 h.p. intake?

Just be carful on this one...guy is raping you on the shipping [$50]...but if you could get it for $100-$150 and add shipping, that would be a nice deal IMO.
An 1850 style carb is close to what could have come on a C2 327
A 4150 style carb, and correct me if I'm off base here is a 396/427 style carb.

That is the same carb I have on my car, works pretty good. Electric choke is a big positive for me, My brother has the same carb on his '65 with a hand choke...pain in the butt...

Without a somewhat aggressive cam, don't "over carburet" the engine. I would change out to the L79 cam, as someone suggested. It give you a lot more options on carb choices.

Yeah it's not fair but ebay is all about total price PRICE and SHIPPING.
Trust me, people will see the $50 and bid less than they would if it was $20, but YOU can't have it both ways. Just wanted you to be aware of it and bid accordingly.

I just put a new Holley Street Avenger 670 w/electric choke on my 72 LT-1 and I really like it. Aluminum with the glass float bowl windows. Runs better than the old 780. I got it on sale before Xmas direct from Holley.

The only difference between a 4150 and 4160 Holley is the secondary metering block vs the secondary metering plate, they are the same CFM carburetor.
