I think probably 95% of the folks on this forum bought their car/built their car because that's what they wanted to drive around in. Not because of 'future collectability' I never even gave thought to what my old cars were 'worth' until about the early '90's, when the marked started to rise. All non-car-people ask right away "what's it worth?" Car guys pretty much never ask, as they don't really care. It's either a cool car to them or it isn't. I'm sure most people who bough a clean SWC 4-8 years ago had no idea that its value would basically double by 2018....they bought one because that's the one they wanted....the one with the blind spot and cookie trays.

21 years ago I bought a puppy, an English Settle for $200. I spent the following year training him to hunt pheasants. In Sept before the start of the season, I went to a pheasant release farm. 8 hunters with their dog, 50 birds released in a huge field, whoever harvested the most birds w/n 45 minutes gets a free ride. Jake and I really cleaned up. Did it again a week later with the same result. Afterwards some guy offered me $5k for Jake. After lunch he offered $8k. I often wonder back then at what amount I would have sold Jake, perhaps $25k, but 11 years later after his passing I realized that would have been a terrible mistake.

I could be wrong, but it seems this is the TV episode I most often hear referenced when people ask me “how much is your car worth?” at a show.
They are almost universally non-Corvette people, but usually start with “that’s a hundred thousand dollar car!” and proceed to tell me about the Counting Cars episode they saw.
I usually explain that while they have been hot for awhile, there’s a pretty good range of value based on a lot of factors. They generally don’t hear me.
Sometimes people mention the Chasing Classic Cars episode where Wayne bought a SWC, repainted the Sebring Silver and sold it for 100ish at auction. He made some remark to the buyer that it would be worth 150 next year... something like that.

Indeed; especially where they are bench testing and troubleshooting the Rochester fuel injection....like they had a clue.
It wasn't a horrible car when they were done - I'll admit that. Prob due to the off-stage team of 4-5 techs that did the 'real' restoration..
