Default 1964 Vette 327 Carb :Best idea for replacement/repair

1964 Corvette 327 I just received my Dad's Corvette and the carb is leaking fuel in garage and not starting well. Looking for best options for a replacement carb or company that could rebuild this carb. Thanks for your help John

Not sure of your particular situation, originality of the carb etc, but just as an FYI I have used Daytona Products (in Florida) to rebuild my '65's original carb as well as two Strombergs from a '41 Buick I had....outstanding work with full rebuild and resto. Not cheap though....I recall the Carter was almost $600 but I wanted to keep it original.

The first thing you want to do is to make sure the carburetor is the original one for that car. If not find an original carburetor core and have that rebuilt.

Rather than just arbitrarily rebuilding the carburetor, I'd find out why it is leaking and fix that. Likely could solve the starting problem as well.

Is it a Holley?

First, as mentioned, determine the carb type and get the numbers off it....

Second, if the car has been sitting for a long time you can take a plastic handled screwdriver and rap on the side of the car with the handle of the screwdriver sharply a couple of times. Its possible you have a stuck float.

First off, let me say welcome & congrats on aquiring your 64! Second, let us know your location in the country as people may know of a great place local to you for a rebuild of this carb if you arent comfortable doing this yourself.

When I bought my car, i had signed up on this site a few months prior. When I got the car, the carb leaked, it was the original Holley that the 365hp L-76 motor came with. I learned that this carb is easily rebuilbable, I bought the Holley "trick kit" and that had everything i needed. I went thru & disassembled and cleaned each piece of the carb, and put it together with all new gaskets, put the proper jets, set all the mixture screws as they said they were supposed to be set from the factory, and afterwards, there were zero leaks & the car ran like a a top.

Point being, your carb is probably perfectly fine, and only needs cleaned, and new gaskets, floats set, and various soft rubber components/diaphragm replaced & it will be like new, and it will be the original part to your car still.

I did that 11 years ago, it has ran great since, this winter, my OCD got the best of me & i sent this original 1964 carb to Holley to be completely restored & replated, for cosmetic reasons only.

A new carb won't function any different, but it will be not original to your car, and over time, that will bother you more and more, so my suggestion is to just rebuild the original.

Let's start with what motor does your 64 have, there were 250hp, 300hp, 365hp all with different carbs, the first two were Rochester, the 365hp was a Holley, we need to know what you have.

Uh, yeah... there were THREE different type carburetors used on the three carbureted '64 engine configurations, and observing the stamped ID and tag (if still attached) will tell you whether you have a OE carburetor, and if it's not you have to figure out what you have.

That's where you start.

The 250 and 300 HP engines have CARTER, not Rochester carbs, but they are completely different models/designs.

If it's "leaking" I'll make and even odds bet that it's a Holley.

Pretty sure the 250 HP 327 is a Rochester 4GC OR Carter WCFB, they used both on the line, AFB was on the 300 HP.

Ah yes, all I knew was that the other 2 were not Holley carbs.

Did Holley give you your original float bowls, metering blocks, screws and N/S style stuff back with your reburbed car?

I don't suggest this approach, personally. Too much chance of causing damage. Instead, I'd suggest rapping on the carb itself.

Hi.... its John the one who started this discussion about a month ago with :

1964 Corvette 327 I just received my Dad's Corvette and the carb is leaking fuel in garage and not starting well. Looking for best options for a replacement carb or company that could rebuild this carb. Thanks for your help John

Latest:

1. I am looking to rebuild the carburetor as I believe it is the original one. So looking for any suggestions on reputable companies that specialize in rebuilding old original 1964 Corvette carburetors.

Here is what I found on carb :

CARTER 2 MADE IN 0-1552 587
APB 6-1518 U.S.A.
(side) (top) (side-corner) (side) (top) Location on the carburetor

2. Also thinking of putting front new disc brakes and boxing and saving the original drum front brakes....interested in getting your thoughts on this one. Any suggestions on any brand or supplier for the new bolt disc brake set?

The car was purchased new by my Dad and is a black with red interior 1964 hardtop with a 327 4 speed. Vin number is 40837S119317. I live in Denver.

Thanks for everyone's help and advice.

Sounds like your car is a 327-300 hp w. a Carter AFB #3721 S ,SA or SB. The #3721 should be stamped on the front bottom base. Not sure if Eric Jackson does Carter AFB carbs but he has an outstanding reputation for carb work.

Nothing really wrong with drum brakes for street use as long as they are in good shape.
