Have you removed the core of the ignition switch?

You have to remove the inner cylinder first. Stick a paper clip in the small hole next to the key slot. Push in on the paper clip while turning the key to the left. Remove the cylinder.

place straightened paper clip in tiny hole in face of switch, with ignition key inserted. Turn key counter-clockwise while pushing in paper clip, and switch will pull out with the key.
Once out, you will be able to unscrew the nut.

When I had my ignition cylinder out I sprayed it with WD40 and a surprising amount of accumulated grime came out .

As already said you use a paper clip. Here is some pictures from my 61 but the procedure is the same.
Joe

Turn you key all the way to the left, accessory, and then insert the paper clip into the hole and push in.

Now continue turning to the left and pull the key & tumbler out. You can see the small brass pin that you need to depress.

Freshen up my memory, don't you have to put the switch in ACC, Leave the key in it, and then put the paper clip in the hole and push.

Save me the embarrassment of having to go to the garage and test it out.

Plaidside beat me and has pics.

The ignition wouldn't be much good if you could just remove the switch with some needle nose pliers without needing the original key, install your own switch with YOUR key -- and start the car and drive off.
